Social Media Restrictions

Harmful insults and acts of bullying are no longer restricted to the actual world. Cyber world is now infected with these issues in which technology and private information are instinctively used to constantly harm or bash emotionally hostilities towards a group or one particular individual. Social networks such as Facebook, twitter, and Google plus have been gaining immense popularity in the past years. With the popularity of these sites, the problems of cyber bullying, online sexual predators and accessibility to adult content also continue to grow. The younger generations are becoming more techno-friendly, with electronic devices such as tablets, computers, and cell phones. With this fact younger children are becoming more vulnerable and more likely to be confronted with these problems. These problems and issues of social discriminations are why there needs to be an age restriction or improved rules and provisions in order to prevent this.

Track back to 15 to 25 years ago. An unfortunate student would normally get bullied at school with physical acts of violence, but as soon as that student arrives at his home he or she is presumed safe. Cyber bullying does not allow this luxury. Cyber bullying occurs over the information waves of the internet, with sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google plus. Which is why the guidelines must be improved or that children should not be allowed to access such sites entirely. With a the tools of direct messaging and posting videos cyber bullying can follow children to their home, beyond the school playground, seven days a week 24 hours a day. Google has allowed cyber bullying and sexual content into the lives of children but bullying has sadly been a part of children’s lives for numerous years, how is this new electronic version different from the traditional physical abuse?

We all know that internet is the future of education and therefore the future for our younger generations. The whole point of the internet is to expand the reach for kids and adults of knowledge at interactions. This cannot be done if sexual predators stalk the chatrooms of myspace. This cannot be done if insecure teens are being bashed by the bullies of cyber world. It is impossible if the companies that create these websites do not prioritize the safety of its users. This is why there must be an age restrictions in order to minimize the risks.
