Prostitution is America’s Payday Prostitution is easily recognized as the world’s oldest profession. In many cultures, prostitutes were looked up to and were respected members of society until those countries were colonized by Europeans. The trade of sex for material objects was not necessarily deemed specifically as prostitution. Such as in ancient Eskimo culture, when a guest would come to a man’s house, the man would offer his wife’s services to the guest. Prostitution would also be used by women to find new partners. In some regions of Africa, it was common for women who wanted to leave their husbands to prostitute themselves in a neighboring town and find a new one. Many of these sex workers don’t use condoms because they fear being caught and rush their encounters with their clients. Others won’t use a condom because the police can use it against them as evidence in court. Some even fear that if they request a condom to be used, their client could become violent. By regulating prostitution, condoms would be a requirement as well as other preventative safety measures. The sex workers would practice safe sex regularly and be subject to weekly STD screenings. Their customers would be better documented so the brothel could get in contact should one of the girls get infected. The working girls would be safer by working in an established brothel and would be protected from customers who get to violent. Approximately 80,000 people are arrested each year for soliciting sex. It costs the government approximately $83.89 each day a person is kept in prison. Assuming they are convicted and sentenced, each prisoner is costing taxpayers $30,619.85 annually or $2,449,588,000 for all 80,000 people arrested. This is time and money wasted persecuting a victimless crime. Instead of antagonizing sex workers, the money could go toward arresting persons involved with violent crimes such as assault, rape, and murder. In fact, it is thought that legalizing prostitution will lower the amount of rapes. According to Kirby R. Cundiff, an associate professor at Northeastern State University, "It is estimated that if prostitution were legalized in the United States, the rape rate would decrease by roughly 25% for a decrease of approximately 25,000 rapes per year....” Logically, the lower rape rate would also lower the amount of people convicted of rape and thereby lowering the cost spent on prisoners even
