The stop-and-frisks from the New York Police Department are searching for some form of evidence to condemn the individual. Ultimately, this evidence usually presents itself as a condom, as it is one of the only common physical object described having a sexual intent. Due to this, many sex workers do not carry condoms or are afraid to because of the risk of arrest. In an interview with the Human Rights Watch, sex worker Anastasia stated that “If I took a lot of condoms, they would arrest me. If I took a few or only one, I would run out and not be able to protect myself. How many times have I had unprotected sex because I was afraid of carrying condoms? With legalization, sex workers could receive a public and government funded education program focusing on varying STIs and HIV/AIDS. With the help of the government, sex workers could be enlightened through teaching to promote knowledge of their own bodies and how to make work as safe as possible. Currently, a program in Sonagachi, India, titled the “Durbar Mahila Samanway Committee” (DMSC) has made great leaps and bounds in the legalization of sex working and fair work practices. The program has been very successful and has “achieved outcomes such as unionization of the sex workers and establishing microcredit societies and vocational training centers for the sex workers” (Dasgupta 1244). With the legalization of sex working, New York could also put programs into place that benefit sex workers on the whole. Education would permit sex workers to be knowledgeable about their own bodies so they can limit what they can do. The figurative chain around their neck is held in place through violence, coercion, drugs, and disease. They have no decision on how they protect their body from these ailments, they remain at the mercy of their pimp, client, and government. The sad situation that many sex workers face in their daily life would be remedied through legalization. The criminalization of sex working in New York has only posed a problem for the individual livelihood of sex workers themselves. I do not believe that the notion of a sex worker being an “object” is inherent, but rather taught to us through society. The legalization of sex working would have profound impacts on our daily life adding to our safety from violence and disease. It is important that we recognize the situation in life that brought a sex worker to the place they are and not punish them for it any further. Judgement is in God’s hands, all we can do is love our neighbor unconditionally. The legalization process would free the sex worker from the violent stranglehold that oppresses sex workers in New York every day. It would give them the freedom to walk down the street without harassment from police. The current, broken system prevents sex workers from being able to control their own health and ultimately their own body.
