Should Prostitution be legal in the United States? Prostitution, often described as “the oldest profession” has been around for many years, and has been practiced in ancient and modern culture. Dating back to the 18th century, women who rolled the continental war served soldiers and officers as sexual partners. One thing that has never changed is the attempt to regulate. Prostitution should be legal in the U.S because the government can help regulate the spread of STD’s between customer and prostitutes by periodically being tested, reduce violence/rape, can benefit the economy, and sex workers can get labor laws. By making prostitution legal it will help reduce these problems. According to Kirby R. Cundiff, PhD, Associate Professor of Finance at Northeastern State University wrote the April. 8th, 2004 working paper titled “Prostitution and sex crimes” that stated: “It is estimated that if prostitution were legalized in the United States, the rape rate would decrease roughly 25% for a decrease approximately 25,000 rapes per year..” The second study researched was a Dutch study and what this concluded was opening up zones called “tripplezones” in these zones were streets where prostitutes could work legally. Reports of rape and sexual abuse dropped by 30 to 40 percent in the first two years after the zones were open. The latest study to show a correlation comes from Rhode Island, There was a loophole in a Rhode Island law that effectively decriminalized indoor prostitution for several of years ending in 2009. In those years the state saw a significant decrease in sexual violence and cases of gonorrhea according to data analyzed by the National Bureau of Economic Research. The slang terms of this occupation, when said, are usually said towards someone in an offensive manner. With women entering the business world daily, Prostitution is another outlet for women to enter it even more than they already do. When asked why do women turn to prostitution? Rasmus Karkov from science Nordic wrote, “ despite the sexual drive, the main reason for prostitution in all groups is money.” This shows that there is an economic incentive just like a women who wants to be head of Berkshire Hathaway. We aren’t in a positon to judge people for their chosen profession. In conclusion By legalizing prostitution no it will not eliminate the abuse that comes with selling your body for money, but it will help regulate the abuse, help prevent the spread of HIV/STD’s, allow labor laws for women in the industry, and last but not least it will help Americas
