As a nation, we are more divided than we have been in over a century. Riots litter the streets crying out for equality after innocent are slain. Police are targeted and ambushed for no reason other than wearing the uniform. Tension rises as both sides grow increasingly uneasy about what each other will do next. Families of both police officers and ordinary citizens mourn over needless deaths. It is the lack of understanding on both sides that fuels this hatred for one another.
American ideology is that we are the promise land. We are the land of the free, yet it seems that the police have a symbol of fear and oppression. The police have become a reminder that we are not as free as we like to think we are. With so much power to dictate our lives it’s only natural we fear them. However, it should not be this way. The police are for the public, by the public. That means that what the police are is a representation of us the citizens. Although, this unfortunately is a fantasized way of thinking now.

We like to think that if crime does not occur in the police departments jurisdiction, then it simply does not occur. However, not all crime that is removed from an area simply vanishes. Many times, a splash of crime will spill over outside of the hot spots that are being targeted. In Miami, Florida roughly 23% of drug dealers that were in a targeted area moved outside the hot spot and continued criminal dealings (Guerette, 2009). Criminals may notice that there is an increased effort in crime reduction in an area and move away to reduce the chance of certainty that they are caught. Many see this as an issue since the police are essentially taking a condensed area of crime and spreading it
