Is it true that excessive force is one of the most used forms of police misconduct? Are unarmed African Americans more likely to get killed during an encounter with police officers than any other race? Yes, both of these shockingly horrifying facts are true. So why are police officers abusing their powers and creating fearful environments when they should be making people feel safe in their communities. Who can we turn to on this earth to keep us safe if everyone and thing seems to be corrupt? When did police brutality become a thing in the U.S.? Well, this all may vary, depending on the gender, age, and size of the civilian. And why do these three things have such a big deal when talking about police brutality. Here is a scenario that happened not too long ago in a Spring Valley High School. A young girl was slammed on the floor while still sitting in her classroom desk by a school resource officer. There are about three different angles of the confrontation but what led up to the incident is still unclear. But that is not the point, a grown man felt the need to slam a young teen girl onto the floor. The girl was sitting at the desk in a class full of other students. She never laid a hand on the officer. There are multiple other ways this situation could have been handled but instead, he decided a more violent route. This is what you would call excessive force. How, besides protesting, can we truly make sure that there will be no more black people being killed, beaten or tortured by police officers? And how can we promote justice and equality in the law enforcement more often? Step 1. Body cameras on every officer will show a huge decrease in police brutality. Body cameras are not going to make everything stop but it will definitely help instill some fear in those who believe they are invisible and can do whatever they want. Step 2. Establishing a "use of force" policy. Letting police officers know that they have boundaries and failure to do so will result in extermination will also help decrease police brutality cases. Step 3. Training police to be kind and not just scripted. Training police to actually become a member of the community and not just a member of the local police
