Personal Assessment Everyday is a chance to grow and learn about yourself and the world around you. After pondering long and hard, I came up with some core values that I find are extremely important to me. My top four core values would be being honest, reliable, caring, and open-minded. I feel very strongly on all four of these values and believe these are important to me. I truly believe in the statement “honesty is the best policy”. As leaders, being honest is extremely important to build a foundation of trust. I have found that whole heartedly listening is a very important step to communicating. Listening to give a verbal response is not what communication is about. Listening is important to understand someone and their situation in order to help them and respond well. Listening is a part of being open-minded. I hope to continue to learn to communicate with others in a way that I can listen to them properly and be open-minded to their ideas that are different than mine. Occasionally others have ideas that I would never have thought of and being open to other ideas and trying the ideas of those around me can help lead to a better experience. Acknowledging and learning how to use core values is important. A person’s core values can tell you a lot about them. As a person learns more about those around them or even themselves, they can grow. Growing can bring to light more core values. Core values can help us accomplish more in our personal lives as well as when we are in a work environment. In this life it is essential to base your work around your beliefs and to feel passionate about what you do. Then spreading your passion for your work onto others is how you grow as an individual and as a company. Which is what I felt after reading the #1 core value.
Basing decisions on Values: Important and lasting beliefs or ideals that are key factors that affect our decisions and what we stand for. According to Gus Lee in his book Courage the Backbone of Leadership, the three high core values that we are to embody to achieve success are Integrity, Courage and Character.
When things are getting tough and people are looking for someone to take charge, I want that person to be me. I believe that I was born to be a leader, because my best work results from when I get control in a situation. In a group setting, something could be as small as a playing a board game or as big a final project, if I want it to go well then I need the lead. All through my life I have held informal leadership roles, such as the ones mentioned previously, and have earned formal leadership positions as well. A particular formal role that I have possessed was being elected captain of my high school varsity basketball team. This role taught me a lot about how to execute with a group of differently skilled people all seeking a common goal, a major component in leadership. The other position I held was being a Peer Leader for my high school, a club that involves mentoring underclassmen in their transition from middle school. This experience taught me to direct a different dynamic, people who need to be taught as well as lead.
I have a long list of values that I find very important to me, but there is a few that stand out the most. Those values are family, friendship, hard work, responsibility, respectfulness, independence, equality, and honesty. My personal values are extremely important
As I get older I have started to realise more and more about what my core values are and making sure to add more and more faith in my life. My biggest core values now are honesty, respect, motivation, and loyalty. These core values in my opinion make a very well rounded person. I believe that with these values and if I continue to have strong christian faith, I can be a better person and have a stronger spiritual wellness.
Some of the various core values I hold are, forgiveness, honesty, and giving a situation my all. As Edward de Bono once said, “Effectiveness without values is a tool without a purpose.” As Edward de Bono and I both believe, core values are a tool everyone should have and use. The song “You Get What You give,” sings, “You’ve got a reason to live, can’t forget you only get what you give.” These lyrics translate to the meaning of, don’t give up, you have a reason to try, but you only will receive success in return for your effort. These song lyrics sing about my third core value of, giving a situation my all. I’ve had a great deal of surrounding help to form my core values. My core values will outline all of the decisions that I will come across in my personal life, as well in my career. Being true to my core vales will bring out my true character and keep me motivated. Understanding and living my core values will open the door to more inspiration in my life. Finally living up to my core values allows me, to get more of the right things done and enjoy the journey more.
My core educational values define what I believe is necessary tools students need to be successful. Such values are provided by the community of people (educators, parents, business partners) who touch the students’ lives. I value knowledge because without awareness of specific content, students are not able to truly feel a part of society. I value development of skills in order for students to apply their knowledge. When skills are applied, students demonstrate their knowledge and ability to function in our current world. I value critical thinking in our students so they can extend their knowledge and skills to solve complex problems benefitting our present and future. I value citizenship and feel that education has a responsibility to model and nurture character qualities in our students. Educating students is raising them equipped with tools that will enable them to function as contributing participants in a productive society. Knowledge, skills, critical thinking, and citizenship are educational values at the core of developing a student ready for the world’s challenges.
There are so many things that are important to me, but only a few that could greatly affect my life if I didn’t have or accomplish them. The biggest things to me are success, family, and freedom. These are all things that are essential to my life in so many different aspects.
I agree with the statement "honesty is the best policy". People will be able to trust people who are honest, liars will have rumors spread around about them, and it's just plain easier to tell the truth. Nobody likes people who lie all the time and won't know whether to trust them or not. People get annoyed by people who lie a lot.
Understanding who we are as individuals can be a struggle for people throughout life. It can be difficult to comprehend who we are and why we exist. There are daily outside influences that help create who we are and what our values are. Values play a significant role in our lives. They shape the choices we make and reveal a big part of our identity to the world. Some values may be more important than others, but they still manage to influence our lives in one way or another, whether we know it or not. Values can range from a tangible item to an idea that has influenced us to stand by and remember those values. The values we hold with the highest importance act as a guide and help us prioritize our purpose and goals in our daily life. My family has taught me a list of values and traits that have helped me become a well-rounded individual. I value my family more than anything because most of my core inner values have started from their teachings at one point or another. My top values that I have developed from my family are dedication, honesty, and wisdom. I will discuss who I am in terms of the important values that shape my personal belief system and decision making framework that, in essence, describes the direction of my life.
Core Values are an important part of my life and I hope to strengthen them in my everyday life. Family, truth, honesty, friendship, and creativity are all a part of how I want to live my life. Personal Core values, as stated by Wright, are “absolutely critical and fundamental to living a life of meaning and purpose, which invariably creates joy, inner peace, contentment and fulfillment” (5). They define who I am and I want a positive outlook on life.
Every person has a set of values that they strongly believe in. Some of these values are simple things such as do not interrupt others or respect those around you. Some values are also more complex. My most important value is to forgive, but not to forget. I know we all should forgive and let it go, but in my mind forgiveness is the most important and easiest part. Forgetting is just something I cannot do.
To be effective listeners, the listening process should be incorporated into our lives. We should be attentive to what people say, clarify what the speaker is trying to come across, and respond in a way the speaker can understand what we are saying. I think I was aware that I needed some improvement in certain areas of this process but I feel as everything is slowly changing. In the future, I’m going try not to interrupt people, get distracted, tune out, and try to get a bigger picture of what the person is telling me. If good listening habits are applied in our day-to-day life, we can easily communicate with anyone and everyone.
