Where to Go When You Have No Where Else To Go
When writing, I have always struggled with many different aspects of writing. With writing, you have to make sure everything is organized and makes sense. For the midterm project, we had to pick out the three main points we struggled worse in and find resources that helped us when writing. The three main struggles I had were, organizing my paragraphs, creating a catchy thesis, and revising my papers. The resources I used were 3 online articles. I have been doing research on the different areas I needed help in. Different resources have given me great tips on how to improve my ability to write a perfect paper.
My first area that I chose was organizing my paper. When writing my papers, it has always been a jumbled mess that no one could keep up with. I would slowly start out on the right path, but then as I started writing more, I would include details that were not needed and go off topic. However, I started to do more research on this particular area and found, The Writing Center at UNC. The writing center at UNC is an online resource, it showed what exactly was needed in a paragraph, showed examples, gave four great tips. Another great resource was, “Purdue OWL”. This was another online resource; this website showed me unity, the basic rules and the elements of a paragraph. When reading this resource, this helped letting me know what I needed to put into a paragraph, it also helped me with organizing, showing me where my topic sentence needed to go and how to stay on track. I used this website with this midterm essay, I took the steps and applied it. The step I used most was the process. I explained how I used the websites and I used illustration in order for m...

Ultimately, I have learned from the research I obtained that when making an outstanding paper I need to make sure I have revised my paper. I have also learned that when making a thesis statement, to include the main idea and to pull the reader in. Lastly, I have learned that when organizing my paragraphs, I need to stay on the main focus and to not go off topic. Doing research has helped me realized what I needed to get done. In high school, I would never check back behind me, I would always write my paper and then turned it in; at least now, I know where to go if I ever need help. Thanks to the websites I have used, I can now make sure all my papers are well organized, stay well with the topic and grabs readers attention.
As the first semester of my sophomore year wraps up, I begin to realize that I have learned a lot in all of my classes. The class that I learned the most from has definitely been my English 111 course. This class have given me so many opportunities to improve my writing skills. With all of the success I’ve had in this class, I believe I will do just fine with writing later in my life.
As I look back into my high school years, I thought I wrote papers well. But then coming into a college environment, my papers were mediocre. By overlooking at my past papers, I found that they were unorganized, sloppy and had bad use of diction. From now on, I will use the tools I learned in English 1100-40 as a foundation for the future papers I intend on writing in college. Following the criteria of organizing ideas so that they flow, impacting the reader with diction and also by being creative, will help become an ideal writer. Following the criteria of staying motivated in short and long term goals, taking responsibility for actions and finally the ability to study well will help me develop into a supreme student.
I was more confident in my writing because I learned to improve my writing by making outline prior to beginning a paper. Without an outline, I would lose track of my thoughts, I would ramble and make common mistakes; it would be catastrophic. The purpose of an outline is similar to having d...
When I wrote many of my papers, I tried to be as organized as possible. Writing research papers always seems to give me problems. My greatest weakness is going to the library and finding the right information to write a paper. When I write a paper, I always construct an outline or thesis. It is easier for me to think about ideas and then write about them. Starting on a paper from scratch without an outline or thesis gives me problems because then I mumble on about the same information. I have learned to read the information over and over again to be sure it is correct and in order. I do not wan to get at shocking gra...
When I read “Proficiency” by Shannon Nichols I really felt for her. I understood and resonated with her story perfectly, especially when she stated “After I failed the test the first time, I began to hate writing and I started to doubt myself. I doubted my ability and the ideas I wrote about.” (83). After I failed my writing assignment I was so embarrassed and didn’t want to write again but obviously, I had to. I always doubt the things I am going to say or which order I am going to organize the essay in. I try so hard to make sure all my sentences are cohesive and all my ideas connect to each other and the main concept but sometimes it just seems that when I keep messing with one little sentence or paragraph I just makes things worse.
A major lesson that I learned was to use different rhetorical styles when writing to help make your paper make more sense and seem more together. There are tons of different types of rhetorical styles that you can add to a paper but the ones that I enjoyed using this semester were clear, swift or sweet. I loved writing in a clear style because it was simple and did not take a lot of thought process. I also liked swift styles because it was short and to the point. The sweet style is something that I actually enjoyed writing in because it was something to please other people and not just myself. Another type of style that I loved to write with was comparison. I liked writing comparison papers because it gave you not only one subject to write about but two, which would make it easier to come up with information to write about. Logos, Pathos and Ethos are always throughout my essays and I have always tried to put at least one of two in every paragraph I write in my papers.
When I am assigned to write an essay, the first thing I do is panic. I panic because I always seem to run into the same problems with my writing process. I have no central idea. I have no clue what I actually want to write about. When I was younger, I always started by making a web or an outline because thats what my teachers encouraged me to do in school, but I don’t do that anymore. Now I sit in front of my laptop, I take a deep breath, close my eyes, gather my thoughts, and type. I just let my thoughts flow onto the page. When I don’t feel the pressure of writing to an audience, my writing is completely different than it is when I am writing something that I know my professor or peers will read. As I am writing this exact sentence, I don’t quite know where I am going with it. My writing process is unorthodox and unorganized, but it is what I do everytime. When I stop trying to follow the linear model of writing, explained by Nancy Sommers as the process of forming an idea, writing about it, then revising afterwards, I feel that I am more capable of discovering something meaningful within my words. When I am forced to write a thesis statement and base my paper solely on it, it doesn’t come out as good as I think it should. It decreases the potential for my ideas to grow and discoveries to be made. It limits me to a single statement and narrows my thoughts, preventing me from discovery.
Throughout my entire writing career I have always had difficulty writing. For one I have never enjoyed it because I am usually not interested in the topic. I also seem to get writers block half way thru whenever I write a paper. My final big problem with writing is that I always procrastinate before I have a paper due. My main problems with writing are procrastinating and having writers block.
I am sitting in my bed, thinking about my process of writing as I am trying to go through it. It seems the more I think about it, the less I understand it. When I am writing, I don’t think. Which I know, sounds bad. But, I spend every single moment of every single day over thinking, over analyzing, and over assuming every aspect of my life. When I’m writing, I’m free from that for just a little bit. Until of course, my hands stop typing or the pencil (no pens- never pens) stops moving, then I’m right back on the carousel that is my brain. Heidi Estrem says, “...writers use writing to generate knowledge that they didn’t have before.” (Writing is a Knowledge-Making Activity 18). I believe my ability to write without an exact destination

Before I prepare to write a paper I look at the prompt. I then take a smoking break so while I am smoking I am brain storming ideas about what to write about. When I get an idea I write them down one by one as I get ideas. Once I find the perfect spot I start looking at what I brain stormed and look at the main ideas I can write the most about. Once I choose what I want to write about I start structuring my paper. When I see the best structural fit for my sub ideas that lead to my main idea I start writing. Then when I am done I revise it with another smoking break, which helps me see if I can expand on the ideas I already have. If not I just wrap up my paper knowing it was a great well written paper that I gave all my thought into and knowing my professor is going to love my paper.
One skill that I wish I had time to improve on is citing sources in MLA style. Through the course, I refused to seek help from my professor until week seven, one thing I regret doing. that could have allayed the fear and doubt I had about this course. Any questions I had could be cleared up as the course progressed. My essays through the subsequent weeks have demonstrated my strength and weaknesses. I do not have many strengths when it comes writing, but still I consider my greatest strength in writing to be being able to clearly understand the prompt and answer it correctly, especially with the analysis essays. I think this is just because I spend most of the scarce time on hand just to think about the prompt, for example, when I was preparing for my rhetorical analysis essay on globalization I thoroughly read both article on globalization by both Kwame Anthony Appiah and franklin Foer .An obvious struggle I have as a writer is organization and transitions. I tend to jump from one topic to another and sometimes cover. I should have used more transitional words in between sentences and paragraphs to make my reader understand the logic of my paper. I have not had enough writing experience and the writing process is difficult for me. I do sometimes admit that it takes days to complete one assignment, but it will be worth it when I become a proficient
A mentally disabled but diligent female high school student attends a tutoring session at the learning center to work on a classroom writing assignment. Despite encouragement and prompts from the tutor, the student is unable to write. She states that she hates writing and declares that she will take a zero for the grade rather than complete the assignment.
Some of the complications I face with writing is not using enough body paragraphs, forgetting a thesis statement, lack of word choice, punctuation errors, etc. I am unaware at times of my mistakes, but I always try to correct them. I have also come to terms with my strengths and weaknesses as a writer.... ... middle of paper ...
