Baseline is a starting point to where growth or regression is measured based upon research and an initial goal.
In the terms of effective leadership in special education, baseline is where I currently stand as a teacher. My goal as a teacher to move every aspect of my classroom to a place better than it was before. Whether this is a student, paraprofessional, coworker, administration, or even my curriculum. I want every aspect of my career to improve for the better each year. Move as a unit and grow as a whole where no student, child, person or material is left behind. All aspects are reflected upon at the end of each day or week and modifications are made.
One way to move in leadership is to put yourself in whoever or whatever shoes you want to move. Get on their level and show compassion. When it comes to students, one way to get on their level is to find out what they’re passionate about. You can find this out by simply asking, talking with his/her parents, or simply observing the preferences of the students. To begin the year, you want to have the students become aware of their strengths by taking a survey. This survey will in turn help the students realize their weaknesses. By using their strengths to improve their weaknesses it makes learning more enjoyable. Work together for a little bit and then allow the student to grow independently and spread their wings. This method of “I do, we do, you do” may take a little longer to achieve the ultimate goal but with the goal in mind, it’s completely work the time. When it comes to big goals in life, the best things take time. I believe education takes time. I have also been able to learn about their requirements for graduation and have learned to incorporate some of their ideas into my curriculum. I want my students to have an active mind, always. Having an active mind gets my students to be active in their learning inside and outside of the classroom.
All these things and actions help me become a leader in my field because there are times when teaching can get dark with behaviors or an overwhelming amount of paperwork. To show compassion and grace to a defeated neighbor or student is a part of being a leader. When I’m willing to understand where these behaviors or paperwork comes from gives me the ability to cause the change and the growth I need to get my student from “point A” to “point B”.
What are you hoping teaching and learning looks like in your school and how do you communicate that vision? (Embodying Visionary Leadership) – There are many leaders in schools that often communicate a BIG PICTURE of what schools should look like, but can’t clearly communicate what it looks like for teachers and students. It is important to be able to discuss elements of learning that you are looking for in the classroom. Not only is important to hold this vision, but to help develop it with staff and be able to communicate it clearly. Many new educators walk into schools thinking that “quiet and order” are the expectations for classrooms, so even though they are doing some powerful work in their classrooms that looks quite messy, they are worried that it does not fit in with the vision of their boss. Due to this, many will often try to tailor their work to look like what they think the principal wants because they really don’t know what is expected. This has been something that has truly helped me grow as a leader in my different organizations. The most influential organization I am apart of is the Texas FFA Association. I am currently in a leadership position that gives me not only the opportunity to have my chapter looking up to me, but the entire state of Texas; the potential of about 112,000 students. Everyday knowing that number, I remain as positively impacting as I can for the students. There are many people who I am friends with through the organization and they are always reminding me how grateful they are to have me here for them when they need someone to express themselves to without judgement, and that's a great feeling to have. Thomas Sergiovanni (2015) describes three essential dimensions of leadership as “the heart, head, and hand of leadership.” The heart describes those characteristics within the school leader that reflect personal “beliefs, values, and dreams.” The head of leadership refers to the practice of teaching and educating. The hand of leadership reflects actions taken by school leaders with respect to management behaviors. (p. 5) Within these elements, there is room for personal choice in how leadership is practiced and it is incumbent on new principals to find an individual leadership style that responds to the uniqueness of each school.
It is my belief that anyone with a desire to change the world would be fortunate to work in education. By sharing my vision with others, and building upon my skills while seeking constant growth, I strive to take an approach to leadership that fosters an effective, nurturing educational environment for the entire school community. Leadership styles begin to emerge the day a teacher enters the classroom. Although the leadership is generally confined to leading and developing students at that time, teachers are hard at work trying out methods of management and taking note of what does and does not work. The effective methods become part of the teacher’s leadership style. Although the ineffective methods are generally discarded, they also assist in shaping the teacher’s leadership style.
Williams. I was thrilled when I came to work here to find that Mrs. Williams is the type of respected but approachable leader that is my preferred leadership style. I am grateful to have her as my mentor for this learning experience, as I feel we match closely in leadership qualities. My strength as a leader is the supportive leadership style. Like Mrs. Williams, I feel that building relationships and a culture of respect and trust is key to being an effective leader. As a teacher, I spend a good amount of time at the beginning of each year building a rapport with students and families which helps me connect with the students. As a leader of teachers I feel that being supportive of my faculty and staff will be most beneficial in helping develop a productive work environment and develop a necessary level of trust with all of the staff under my supervision. I also want to be participative and achievement oriented. I have always had a drive to be successful in all I do. I am confident that this skill will carry over to my role as a leader. No matter the position someone may hold in society everyone has progressed to where they are in life because they had a teacher, someone who taught them in the way they should go. Teacher as defined in the dictionary as one who instructs. To teach someone is to communicate skills and give instruction. Today I would like to tell you why I would like to become a teacher. Specifically speaking I will tell you what has led me to this decision and why I want to become a teacher.
Just like what Uncle Ben told in the Spiderman movie “Great power comes great responsibility,” as a leader it is my responsibility to build a systems and make sure that those systems are working to ensure students achievement, a system that will help teachers grow professionally, a system that will help other colleagues function to their fullest potential and system that will bind the community and other partners to be one of the pillars of the school.
My goal as a teacher is to improve my student’s education and help them grow knowledgably. I like to see students at different levels develop with each other and learn. I want to challenge the students and watch them grow to their highest level of education. Therefore, having the students in groups is the best educational strategy I like to use a lot. I want my students to have freedom with whatever creativity they want, and to allow them to express themselves at any time. With this freedom students will be able to experiment with likes and dislikes and be able to figure their weaknesses and strengths.
