My Leadership Style Leadership styles begin to emerge the day a teacher enters the classroom. Although the leadership is generally confined to leading and developing students at that time, teachers are hard at work trying out methods of management and taking note of what does and does not work. The effective methods become part of the teacher’s leadership style. Although the ineffective methods are generally discarded, they also assist in shaping the teacher’s leadership style. Therefore, I realize my management style must be somewhat fluid. Leaders should strive for consistency whenever possible, but they must also consider the personal attributes of the person they are leading. An employee’s work ethic, personality, and motivation should be considered. In some situations, democratic leadership can be very effective. In other situations, authoritative leadership is required. I am still developing the skill of transitioning from one role to another, as needed. As stated, my preference is to work collaboratively and serve in the role of manager. The first is my collaborating teacher from my original teaching internship. She taught me how to manage students and parents. Although my personal leadership style developed and evolved over the years, there are still many parts that mirror the methods I learned from her. The next major contributor is the principal at the school where I worked as a reading coach. She was an amazing leader and taught me how to include teachers in the decision-making process without relinquishing control as the ultimate leader. This method was completely foreign to me when I came to her school. I had worked under several authoritative principals, and the concept of a leadership team was completely new. If I ever have the opportunity to serve as a school administrator, I am certain my leadership style will mirror many of her
