Instructional Style and Techniques Developing an instructional style in the classroom is important because it gives the student an idea of how they will be in taking information. As a teacher, my instructional style will be more of a student-centered approach to learning. I will still have the authority figure, but will allow the students to play an active role in the learning process. My role is to coach and facilitate student learning, along with the overall comprehension of the material. The student’s learning will be measure by both informal and formal forms of assessment, which includes tests, group projects, journals, and class participation. My teaching style will impact my classroom management plan because it will reflect the beliefs and philosophy that I have towards education. …show more content…
Problem-Solving Instruction will occur in my classroom. Students will be given explicit instruction in the steps to solving a mathematical problem including understanding the question, identifying relevant information, choosing a plan to solve the problem, solving it, and checking over the answers. Prior Knowledge Activation will also be included as one of my strategies. This strategy will most likely be used when new lessons are being introduced to the classroom. Students should be able to recognize and master the previous material before beginning on a new lesson. Cooperative Learning will also be an option when instructing the students. Students will be allowed to pair into groups where they can help each other better understand the material. Another strategy that I would use, but not limit myself to, is authentic assessment. Students will be given bell ringers at the beginning of each class period and are responsible for completing it in their
The Blake and Mouton Leadership grid studies how leaders help an organization through concern for production and/or concern for people and is based on a nine point scale
Every video I watched displayed tools that I could use in my own classroom. The instructional strategies and models used in the classrooms were great. My current teaching philosophy about instructional strategies and models would be that they are great to use. As a teacher, looking for ways to help teach certain lessons is a must. Every teacher found different ways to teach the materials to their students. It is always great to have resources in the classroom to look back on. Students love to have resources to guide them. In the video (Case #1112), I would emulate their strategy by letting my students use a textbook. I feel that textbooks are reliable sources and can be used to validate certain materials. In the video, you can tell that the students were using the textbook as a tool to prove their discussion with each other. In the video (Case #876), I would avoid assessing my students in whole-group discussion. I would have my student in groups to see how they communicate with each t=other about our discussion. Seeing my students evaluating each other’s opinions would be a great way into assessing their knowledge about the lesson. A classroom environment I would like to teach in would be with students who are ready to ask questions. Students who are not afraid to express their thoughts about the instruction. It would be easier for me to assess my students if that were
Early childhood education provides the building blocks to learning. The children who are enrolled in a preschool or child care setting are being exposed to a variety learning materials as well as new concepts and ideas. The young learners need to be taught in a setting that provides strategies that play to their weakness as well as strengths. This is where differentiated instruction comes into play. Differentiated instruction is a model of instruction that allows educators to offer alternatives and options to their learners to meet their learners’ needs. Tomlinson (2001) states “Differentiated classrooms provide different avenues to acquire content, to produce or make sense of ideas and developing product so that each student can learn effectively” (p. 1).

There are many factors to consider as to why a student may have failed or had to retake a class, but we believe there is one major factor that most people neglect to think about. Students are unable to understand the material due to the style professors use to teach. When students are unable to understand the material, they begin to get frustrated. Some eventually begin to give up because they think they will never be able to learn the material. So, why is it that some students can pass a class while others do not? We think that each student has their own unique learning style while each professor has their own way of teaching. Some professors teach by lectures, some use visuals, some use hands-on activities, and some use a variety of these methods. When taking these simple factors into consideration, it is easy to see why a student that learns best by viewing pictures or diagrams may struggle or become distracted easily during a lecture-based course ("Types of Learning Styles.") This can cause them to do poorly in the class and if they need to retake the class again it
Direct instruction disproves the notion that students will all of a sudden develop skills on their own. Instead, direct instruction teaches students systematically through scaffolded steps, helping them see both the purpose and the result of each step. It is a research base program. “Direct instruction has a long history of meeting the needs of learners with many and differing complex learning issues” (Luiselli, Christian, Russo, Wilczynski, 2008, p. 201). Direct instruction has been successful in targeting Reading. Reading Mastery is a program designed for direct instruction to accelerate growth in the area of reading. “The Report of the National Reading Panel (2000) and Put Reading First (Armbruster, Lehr, and Osborn 2001) identified five areas that are critical to reading success: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension” (Luiselli, 2008, p. 204). Reading Mastery targets all five of these essential components of Reading.
My personal philosophy of classroom management focuses on creating an environment where children feel safe and where they feel like they belong. I will create this environment for my fourth grade class through making my expectations of the students clear while developing an engaging lesson plan and personable interactions with my students. I developed my philosophy from studying different theorists and based my philosophy on the theories of Glasser and Kounin. Glasser believed that the teacher’s roll in the classroom is that of a leader rather than a boss. He believed that students should be given power in the classroom and that the teacher should share it with the students. I will use his ‘7 caring habits’ specifically supporting and respecting to help my classroom feel safe and welcoming to my students. Meeting the individual needs of my students will be the focus of my classroom management routine. I will meet individual needs by promoting self management and self efficacy in my students by creating an environment that that has predictable and consistent daily routines while focusing on my student’s successes (Shindler, 2010). Having a predictable routine will encourage a success oriented environment and will reduce anxiety and help towards creating positive self efficacy in each of my students (Shindler, 2010). In Glasser’s Choice Theory he talks about focusing on the present and not bringing up the past (Glasser, 2010). Therefore, I will focus my classroom on being goal driven and will help each student obtain their goals. Thus, helping my students have positive self efficacy. I will apply Kounin’s technique of Momentum (Pressman, 2011). This involves the teacher keeping exercises short and moving around the room a lot so...
I am writing this essay about learning styles. More notably I will write about my personal learning style. Also a quick idea of why I chose to go back to school to seek a degree. There are multiple learning styles out in the world audible, tactile, and visual. Audible learning style focuses on learning by listening and sound patterns. Visual learning focuses on learning by using pictures, drawings, shapes, paintings and sculptures. Tactile or kinesthetic learning style focuses on learning by a more hands on approach using gestures, touching, body movement, positioning and object manipulation. I am a tactile and visual learner and in the next paragraph I will discuss these findings.
The first strategy I will look into and talk about is how Mrs. Franzmeier used whole group instruction. She used whole group instruction to the whole class during math and right before reading groups. I can see this strategy being used in every single subject and just altered for other students. Whole group instruction can be found in many different ways. It can be verbal, a checklist, written, and it can also be a combination of all of these ideas. Mrs. Franzmeier used a combination of all of them she had the information written out on the board on what was going to be accomplished she also had checklists and times and finally she would verbally explain it to the class. This strategy affects the students learning because whole group instruction is the first step for checking for understanding from the students. The reason for this is because you need to make sure everything is clear to the students before moving on otherwise it is only going to c...
There are four dimensions of preferred learning style which is, active-reflective, sensing-intuitive, visual-verbal, and sequential-global. According to the results from online learning style assessment, I find my preferred learning style is more reflective compare to active because my intensity of reflective is 5. Usually, when I have an assignment, I rather think it through first and then try to understand the outline by myself. On the other hand, active learner tend to retain and understand information by doing some active with it, for example, in this case active learner tend to like have discussion with others and then start do the task. As a reflective learner, I always think it through first when I get a task. For example, when I was
In today’s society being a coach can be extremely complicated especially compared to earlier years. Coaching requires not only many technical and personal skills but also has to include positive psychology that will affect all athletes regardless of gender, age, and race. After reading various articles this leads me to the question, what is a coach? How do coaches differ from one another? In addition are we forgetting the importance of not only coaching but the sports psychology aspect of coaching overall? Regardless of what you may have read or heard I believe not only do all coaches have their own coaching style but every coaching technique and style is different. Coaching styles and positive psychology are two techniques that can provide
Through exploring multiple learning theories and reflecting on my own teaching beliefs, I have developed my own theory of learning. As I developed my theory, I wanted to consider what it takes to be a highly effective teacher. An effective teacher must have mastery of instructional strategies, classroom management, classroom curriculum design, and use assessments as feedback (Laureate Education, 2010a). By using a variety of instructional strategies, teacher’s can meet the learning styles of all the students in the classroom. Effective classroom management can lead to students feeling safe and more willing to take risks. When a student feels comfortable to take risk, then learning will increase and the students’ confidence will grow. Classroom management also creates order in the environment, which will allow effective learning to occur. By understanding curriculum, the teacher can target skills and causes learning to take place. Teachers need to deliberately plan lessons around standards and specific goals based on curriculum and the school’s mission (Marzano, 2010). Assessments need to be use to guide instruction and used as a “method for improvement and mastery,” (Marzano, 2010). While determining my own theory of learning, I believe that I need to consider what effective teachers demonstrate in the classroom.
One other co-teaching structure is alternative teaching. When a classroom has alternative teaching, “one teacher takes a small group of students and provides instruction that is different than what the large group is receiving” (Ferry). Alternative teaching provides intense instruction for selected students in the classroom. When a classroom has alternative teaching “one teacher will work with the majority of the class, while the other
Thought out our lives, we are faced with many different learning experiences. Some of these experiences have made a better impact than others. This can be attributed to everyone’s different multiple intelligences or learning styles. A persons learning style is the method though which they gain information about their environment. As a teacher, it is our responsibility to know these styles, so we can reach each of our students and use all of the necessary methods.
In a classroom, a teaching strategy is a generalized plan for a lesson which includes structure, instructional objectives and an outline of planned tactics, necessary to implement the strategies. Reece and Walker (2002) describe a teaching strategy as a combination of student activities supported by the use of appropriate resources to provide particular learning resources. It is that procedure by which new knowledge is fixed in the minds of students permanently. For this purpose, a teacher does extra activities in the class. These activities help the teacher to take shift from one strategy to another. A method of teaching on the other hand is directly related to the presentation of the lesson. The choice of the teaching method depe...
