The human being is created in this world to learn something every day. Also, he or she is to improve himself or herself. In the learning process people make mistakes all the time, and naturally, they learn a lot from their own and other’s mistakes. It is the same as my situation about my class. My goal that I was hoping to achieve was to pass my English class with a good grade. It has happened as I was hopping, and I learned from my own mistakes. I had English 49 last semester which I had a lot of problems with my first essay. My struggle was all in my first essay but after that I got good grades on my other assignments. For this reason, when I started my first essay, I did not know how to write and what to write. When I handed in my English paper, I was patiently waiting to get my paper back so I could see my mistakes. A week later, my English instructor handed the paper back to me, and I was finally able to see my mistakes and the errors that I had made in my essay. After reviewing my paper, I realized that I needed to focus on using correct grammar, writing structure, and clearer details in order to improve my writing skills.
First of all, when I read my paper, I realized that grammar is one of my major problems that I needed to work on. There were many ways that I worked on to improve my grammar. The easy way that I fixed my paper was by correcting my grammar. There were many ways that I knew how to get help to improve my essay. For example, I went to a computer lab, and I got help from the computer by working on a grammar helping program. It is going to help everyone to improve their writing skills. After I was done reading my paper, I learned my problems that next time I have to focus more on my problems and put more attention. By putting more effort, it will be easy to organize my essay. My goal was to pass the class with a good grade. The significant of this story was that I finally end up getting a good grade, and that makes me feel good. The important thing about it was that I learned many things about how to instruct the essay from beginning to the end. After I went and checked my grade, it was a big shock for me that I passed my class and achieved my goal. It made me very happy because I could move to the higher classes with having a lot of knowledge.
The first essay given in this course was about our whole composing process. This essay was hard to write about and I remember having several grammar mistakes. Sitting down and writing my process on paper,
‘I am going to fail’ was the very first thought that crept into my mind on that very first day of class. Before I stepped into the classroom on the first day, I felt pretty good about my writing. I had done previously well in English, and didn’t think this class would be much of a challenge. This all changed on the first day of school, when my professor talked about the level of reading and writing expected for this class. I remember thinking ‘I don’t read, why couldn’t I have been born someone who likes to read?!’ Since this moment on the very first day of class, I have grown immensely through hard work. Even so, I still want to praise myself for being brave enough to ask if I can rewrite it, which is considered to be the most important step for my improvement. Then I used one hour to work on this essay after class. At the same time, I signed up for the writing tutor online, used my free time to meet with the tutor and fixed it at home as soon as possible. Above all I gradually improved myself. So, I become more and more self-conscious and responsible for the study of writing which I didn't have enough before.
When I read “Proficiency” by Shannon Nichols I really felt for her. I understood and resonated with her story perfectly, especially when she stated “After I failed the test the first time, I began to hate writing and I started to doubt myself. I doubted my ability and the ideas I wrote about.” (83). After I failed my writing assignment I was so embarrassed and didn’t want to write again but obviously, I had to. I always doubt the things I am going to say or which order I am going to organize the essay in. I try so hard to make sure all my sentences are cohesive and all my ideas connect to each other and the main concept but sometimes it just seems that when I keep messing with one little sentence or paragraph I just makes things worse.
This learning goal is to develop a better grasp on my grammar skills and to avoid cliché. Therefore to achieve these goals, I must work on understanding the rules of grammar and also practicing writing on my personal time. To make this goal even more reachable, I have to learn how to understand the rules of grammar, how to apply them, and to stay onto the main point. I also will be contacting the instructor and/or the teaching assistants when in need of help. By putting these goals into place, it allows myself to demonstrate my work abilities and forces myself to adapt to a new and better writing style. Furthermore by trying to accomplish these goals, it allows me to develop my writing skills into a more professional and academic way. Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.
Writing an essay often seems to be an overwhelming task for many individuals. For students like myself, who came from another country, writing can be more difficult and challenging. It can be very frustrating to fully comprehend an idea, and being unable to express it proficiently in English can be excruciating. At the beginning of the semester, I had a different idea of what is considered as good writing. In my first rough draft for my first essay, “Post-secondary education and cultural backgrounds”, I demonstrated mostly of my preconceived idea of what good writing is suppose to be. I tried to sound intelligent by asking rhetorical questions and using big words improperly. I noticed that there was no harmony and organization on my essay as a whole. I had no idea what MLA was. With the help of the Writing Center and my determination on continually revising my essay, my scattered ideas developed into cohesive statements. I learned the use of topic sentences, thesis, reference page, page number, and other given structures on writing a paper. As I tried to develop my skills to becoming a good writer, my writing and knowledge has slowly grew into the accepted academic text.
As a second language learner I have never expected myself to be a perfect writer throughout the semester. Even If English was my first language still, I would not be a perfect writer. It is not about first or second language, it is about how well I understand the learning objectives. Then organizing and writing with my own ideas and putting them in my paper. I am going to be honest, I am not good at English subject and English subject is my strongest weakness than the other subjects. In this paper I will discuss and analyze my own writing, reflecting on the ways that my writing has improved throughout the semester.

Becoming a good student for most is not an easy task. One may be asking if there is a definite way to distinguish a good student and the answer is it 's merely impossible to say a student is considered “good” based on only one factor. Coming from a Spanish speaking household having to learn a new language can always be difficult. While, I was a child learning a second language was difficult. It was difficult for me to put words to use in the correct way. And use terms that make sense with one another term. It was difficult for me because some Spanish words sound the same as English words, and while learning I wanted to translate everything the way I say it in Spanish to English. Before entering this class, I thought I was prepared for college English.
