Having responsibility is one of the things that human possesses that makes them unique because this shapes their identity. It gives them a sense of purpose through setting themselves a goal or objective which can bring themselves to a world of success. This encourages them to do the best of their ability through having confidence within themselves. Responsibility involves decision making which finds it by most of the people a tough thing to do because it leaves uncertainty whether this will lead them to failure or not. Also an individual’s decision comes or based from his or her moral. His family couldn’t afford to send him to school because they were having hard time to make money. Chris went to Vanessa’s hometown called Manawaka, Minnesota to continue his studies since they don’t have high school somewhere near his hometown. Vanessa describes Chris as a “tall,lanky boy” with eyes “slightly slanted” which indicates Chris depression. Chris wants to finish his studies to fulfill his dreams to become a civil engineer or a traveller. He was eager to make money in order achieve his dreams through selling vacuum cleaners, magazines, and sewing machine. However, he failed since the Depression was taking place this time which everyone struggles in making money and finding decent jobs. Because of his inability to earn money, it led him to his depression. In order to cope with this kind of problem,Chris creates an alternative reality which he thinks is the best solution to patch up the obstacles he was facing. When Chris arrived at Manawaka, Manitoba, Chris received some distasteful words from his grandfather named Timothy Connor against his family regarding their poorness. “He appeared to be absent, elsewhere” according to Vanessa which indicates that Chris relies on his illusion to deal with his problems rather than face them. Vanessa received a mini saddle with criss cross embossed on it which comes from Chris’s imaginary ranch which made her believed that Chris got a lovely ranch. Chris also describes his house as “made out of tree...the leaves were firmly and green on them”. He even the described the lake near his house “more like an inland sea”. However when Vanessa visits Chris’s hometown,Shallow Creek for the first time, she was greeted with house made of trees but it is basically an old shack. Chris also exaggerates his horses. He told Vanessa that he got two horses named as Duchess and Firefly, which he described them as sleek horses meant for racing. However by the time Vanessa arrived at Shallow Creek, it was revealed that Chris only have plough horses which Vanessa described as “badly matched as a team”. Vanessa realized that the horses Chris told him doesn’t even exist and this hinted her that these horses came from Chris’s illusion world that he lives in.
