Throughout history, the lives and well-being of essentially every single human being on the planet have relied on trust and truthfulness in order to survive or obtain power, respect, and pride. When you think about it, since birth, you have to start trusting those around you. You must trust your parents to keep you alive and relatively comfortable. You have to trust doctors to bring you into this world. So, let us begin with what trust is and how it has been used in the past, as well as how it is connected to integrity.. After all, there is a reason that you have to trust each other. Trust is a pretty big subject to expand on, but now we need to move on to the aspect I mentioned in the beginning of this paper. In case it slipped your mind, I am talking about how trust is related to integrity. Integrity is defined as “ the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles”. So how does this tie in with trust? Put simply, the more trust you put into a person, the more you rely on their integrity. The more trustworthy the person, the more integrity they have. Honesty is a big part of integrity. If you are not honest, you cannot have integrity. This goes the same for moral principles. To have integrity, you must have strong moral principles. This can include having beliefs against dishonesty or theft. For that matter, it can include anything that you know is wrong. There are exceptions, depending on what part of the world you were raised in, but moral principles generally meet in the middle. It partially relies on what people call a conscience. This is often described as the little voice inside your head that tells you when something is wrong or immoral. Many lives other than your own can depend on it. Personal responsibility covers a much broader spectrum than just that though. Products, people of all races and genders, and Mother Nature herself can rely on you being personally responsible. Having an oil spill, contaminating consumer products, or even just completing work late falls under your own jurisdiction and can have very serious consequences. You are responsible and accountable for all of your actions. On the other hand, you are also personally responsible for all of our successes and victories. Being personally responsible is not always a bad thing, although you may find out that the more responsibilities you take on, the harder it is to successfully navigate or complete your obligations. In conclusion, Integrity is made up of trust and moral principles and personal responsibility is being accountable to yourself and others. Integrity means to adhere to a personal moral code but that is not a guarantee with honesty. For example, if a person breaks something they were not supposed to and that person is not asked about what they did and they keep it silent that does not mean said person is lying. However, a person who personally believes in owning up to their actions and adheres to that belief tells someone that they broke an item by mistake then they are showing integrity. Basically, honesty is giving your word but integrity is keeping it. You can be honest about believing in something but if you adhere to that moral belief then you are showing integrity. American professor Stephen L. Carter wrote in his essay “The Insufficiency of Honesty” that “The first point to understand about the difference between honesty and integrity is that a person may be entirely honest without ever engaging in the hard work of discernment that integrity requires: she may tell us quite truthfully what she believes without ever taking the time to figure out whether what she believes is good and right and true.” (Carter) This shows that a person can tell the truth about what they believe but if do not follow it consistently, it means that they are not showing integrity. American writer Isaac Asimov said in his book How to Enjoy Writing: A Book of Aid and Comfort when he said “Integrity, is, to me, a somewhat stronger word than “honesty.” “Honesty” often implies truth-telling and little more, but “integrity” implies wholeness, soundness, a complex philosophy of life.” (Asimov) This further explains the difference between integrity and honesty. Integrity; it's a word that has seemed to be lost in our country as of late. There isn't much more to be said than that. In American culture, this virtue has seemingly lost all of its sheen, as being honest and showing moral uprightness is not exactly the most attractive of actions anymore. Indeed, if one were to ask a random bystander on the street what the word integrity actually means, they probably would not be able to answer accurately. I personally find that a sad truth, as integrity is not only something that I know, however, but it is also one of my most treasured virtues. I personally believe that integrity is not merely an idea. This virtue is an action; how one decides to live their life every single day.

To trust someone means to put ones full confidence and reliability on an acquaintance such as someone one is close with. In The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Brutus, one of the leading characters put his complete trust in the people trying to tell him what he should believe. Brutus joined the conspirators to help take down Julius Caesar because he believed it was what was good for Rome based on what he was deceived. In public, integrity plays a very important role since people who have integrity hold firmly to their views, which support them to act properly in academic, personal and professional circumstances. In the academic community, students of integrity will notice academic standards severely, exchange ideas freely and improve the social acknowledgment of the value of their institutions. In personal conditions, integrity leads individuals to understand who they really are, thus they can be honest to their benefits and ideal life. In the workplace, truth enhances personal commitment to the code of ethics set forth by the profession. Additionally, integrity begins mutual beneficial personal relationships in a community, helps people develop a sense of reliability and responsibility, and fosters their professional competencies. In a word, the more people have integrity in a community, the more efficiency and efficiency we can have, and the more happiness and trust we can enjoy.
Integrity is needed, when making any decision in my opinion. In my current position in my work, not just we are required by the law to be honest and having and integrity helps a great deal to do my job a great many easier. I work on one on one setting and my clients or customers, having integrity doing the right thing is always the priority event know one’s looking. My customers always expect me to tell them the truth and give them educated advice. Of course, doing the right thing in my business sometimes can cause me to lose a customer. However, in my options I rather loss a customer than compromise my integrity. Once the customer finds out they can trust they tend to help me in my work by referring another customer.
In the article “Success Will Come and Go, But Integrity is Forever” by Amy Rees Anderson, Amy gives her definition of integrity and includes experiences she has witnessed as an entrepreneur and counselor. Amy’s definition of integrity is “doing the right thing at all times and in all circumstances, whether or not anyone is watching.” This is the best way to explain integrity; just as I have experienced recently in my Business Law class. During a test, there was no supervision and a lot of students put aside their integrity and put themselves and others in a difficult situation. The author goes on to say that “It takes having the courage to do the right thing, no matter what the consequences will be.” The majority of the students who did cheated confessed to their faults. It takes a long time to build integrity, especially in educational setting like college. Most classes last around 5 months each semester and according to Amy, integrity takes years to build.
