Caring Reflection One can find caring practices in many aspects of human life. Usually parents care for their young children, and children care for their older parents, husbands and wives care for their spouses, etc. In the professional scope, usually healthcare professionals associated with care. The foundation of nursing practice is an idea of caring. “Caring is important for many reasons, but is considered crucial for quality healthcare” (Tanking, 2010, p.3). So, what does caring actually mean?
Caring and Nursing
From my point of view, the concept of care or caring is very complex. It includes concern, attention, love, kindness, compassion, protection, trust, support, responsibility. On the one hand, caring for somebody is a very hard work, but on the other hand, caring is a very rewarding experience. As a parent and a wife, I can say that when you care for your loved ones you create the intimate connections that makes you feel happy and whole. As a nursing student, I would say that caring in nursing is even broader concept compared to the personal caring for family.
First of all, caring in nursing requires confidence and knowledge. Knowledge can be acquired from education and confidence comes with experience and practice. “Without knowledge and competence, compassion and care are powerless to help

A nurse, who is knowledgeable and confident, respectful and trustworthy, who has a personal approach for each of the patients and advocate for them, who can put herself or himself in the patients’ place, is a caring nurse. Of course, it is not very easy and there are many challenges, but if the nurses can work hard and always try to provide the best caring experience, they can succeed and be professionally satisfied. There is also another question that I couldn’t find the answer yet: how do we measure the caring? Is there any way we can know that we provide enough care? This can be the topic of my future
The phenomenon of interest has been identified as the expressions of caring by nurses on acute care general surgical wards (Enns, C., Gregory, D., 2007). This problem statement was addressed promptly and clearly in the article. The caring research that has been obtained in other studies has yielded inconsistent results due to the varying definitions of caring. In the words of the late Virginia Henderson: “nurses help people, sick or well, to do those things needed for health or a peaceful death that people would do on their own if they had the strength, will, or knowledge.” Truer words were never spoken-- my personal nursing philosophy is much like Henderson’s in that I believe nurses do not simply follow physician’s orders, but utilize their knowledge, skills, and ability to think critically in order to help patients achieve a better quality of life.
Caring lies in its moral foundation. Caring validates both the nurse learder and the patient as human. Caring is one the most critical ingredients for health, human development, human relatedness, well-being, and survival.
What does ‘care’ mean? Care is the provision of what is necessary for your health, welfare and protection of someone or something. However when you talk about ‘care’ in a care practice the term changes and becomes more about enabling people to meet all their needs which would refer to their social, physical, emotional, cognitive and cultural needs. The individual is central to the meaning of care in this context.
Jean Watson is a well respected American nurse theorist that created the Theory on Human Caring. From my perspective her concept on caring for a human being simple, yet has much depth and meaning. I do believe that I became a nurse because I have the ability to care for another human being in an organic way that comes straight from my heart. As I study Jean Watson’s theory further, I can see that parts of her theory can enhance my nursing practice. I strive to continue to learn and grow on a personal and professional level daily. I am also finding that I have brought a portion of her theory into the care of my patients that I have had in the past. There are a countless number of nurses, but not all nurses truly represent the importance of being able to care for another human being, as it is an honor. The Theory of Caring by Jean Watson holds strong for nurses to work with compassion, wisdom, love, and caring. Watson’s theory is built on a foundation of giving care, the core components are: values, faith-hope, sensitivity, trust, feelings, decision-making, teaching-learning, environment, and human needs. If one is able to bring this theory into their live, one might find that it has the power to enhance themselves professionally and personally.
Caring is the biggest aspect in the nursing field. Aspiring nurses choose to become nurses because they want to care for people in ways that most professions cannot do. Without caring nursing would not be the field it is today. The culture of caring involves intervening programs that help to build caring behaviors among nurses. As nurses become stressed and become down on their life it has shown that caring for oneself before others is key in caring for patients. Lastly, throughout the years many theorists have proven that caring has come from many concepts and ideas that relate directly to ICU nursing.
Within the nursing situation, the shared lived experience of caring enhances personhood (Alligood 2014). Boykin and Schoenhofer’s meaning of caring is being lived out moment to moment; and it is in the intimacy of caring that respect for self and respect for others are the values that confirm personhood (Alligood 2014).
In conclusion, Jean Watson’s theory of caring, a middle-range theory, provides essential framework and guidelines in nursing shortage problem. Nurses who exposed to caring theory have moral and ethical obligations to care for others during challenging situations. Nursing is a multidisciplinary career that encompasses many different aspects into one to be able to provide the best care possible for all patients. Nurses are caregivers, counselors, advisors, teachers, and more, but to be able to do the job of a nurse one must put into perspective the person or patient, the environment, health, and the nurse. These four concepts together create the Nursing Metaparadigm. These concepts directly influence how a nurse will perform care to a patient and the type of nursing practice that will be demonstrated by that nurse. Nurses use practical knowledge and theoretical knowledge in the many roles that nurses perform. Defining what a nurse is varies from person to person. Some have described a nurse as a person who shows care to their patients while others say that nurses assist to regain the ill’s health back. There is no wrong answer in defining what a nurse is. Moreover, I believe that a nurse is one who treats their patients with the dignity and respect that they deserve, and assists them in promoting and preventing their health illness and lastly, enhancing their health to optimal status.
