The five different types of leadership strategies are laissez-faire, Autocratic, participative, transactional, and transformational. Each of these types of leadership have a different belief of how employees should be deployed. A successful leader must have the ability to influence other people and must be able to inspire, motivate and direct their activities. This push provided by leaders directs employees in the right direction to achieve group and organizational goals. Corporate leaders that demonstrate strong participative and transformational leadership qualities are more successful with new generations versus historical autocratic leaders that imposed their beliefs and opinions on their work force. The result of a leader adopting participative and transformational characteristics is a happier and more motivated workforce. A leader that follows these key strategies is able to act as a base, allowing employees to build off of the leaders motivational skills. A laissez-faire leader lacks direct supervision of employees and fails to provide regular feedback to those under his supervision. Only highly experienced and trained employees who require little supervision fall under the laissez-faire leadership style. This leadership style hinders the production of employees needing supervision. The laissez-faire style produces no leadership or supervision efforts from managers. This often leads to poor production, lack of control and increasing costs(Johnson, n.d, para 2). The autocratic leadership style allows managers to make decisions alone without the input of others. Managers possess total authority and impose their will on employees. No one challenges the decisions of autocratic leaders. A transformational manager motivates their employees to wok for the good of the organization, rather than their own personal gain (Duggan, n.d). No ship can set sail without a captain, and the same is true with business. Success is made by the steps a leader choses to follow when leading a group of people. William Deming, management consultant followed transformational steps to transform the way workers behaved in the automobile manufacturing industry. Through the use of these methods, Deming’s approach helped the industry improve design, quality, testing and sales (Duggan, n.d). When a company needs to make changes within the organization, the participative and transformational leadership style helps employees accept these changes easily, this is because, they played a role in the process. It causes them to feel as if their opinions matter.
