As a writer, you are selling a service. In order to do so, you need to come up with selling points to convince people to use your service over that of your competition.

Experience as much success as possible; you need to understand your target audience in general. Every writer has a different target audience, which means it is up to you to figure out what drives and interests your target audience. This applies to both your written text and your qualities as a writer.

Trust is another big factor in the quest for getting paid more. Clients want a writer they can trust and rely on. It is up to you to repeatedly prove to your clients that you can be trusted, and one of the easiest ways to go about this is to be reliable.

When you have proven you are trustworthy and have shown that you are reliable, ask for a modest pay increase. Do not make excuses for your request; simply say that you need it so that you may continue to dedicate as much time as possible to their projects without having to watch the clock.

What you are saying in essence is that you do a fantastic job because you dedicate a lot of time to your work. What you are intimating is that times have changed a little, and that you just need a little extra in order to continue working at the standard that you are.
