In the mid eighteenth century James Watt created the steam engine, allowing Britain to produce and distribute energy resources faster than any other country, at the time. This caused other countries to become more dependent on Britain for all energizing products. Britain held all the components that were needed to make energy, such as hydrocarbon fuels, coal, iron, oil and natural resources. As time progressed, so did the demand for the resources. The demand caused many urban living citizens to move from their remote homes to the city, because there was an overwhelming need for factory workers and miners. Finding a home within the city limits became scarce for many families, because the continuous demand for workers caused homes to become occupied quickly. The living conditions in the city were very unsanitary; the houses were built quickly, resulting in a lack of support and unsteadiness. The technological advancements in the mid-1700s, known as the Industrial Revolution, produced substances that continue to effect the environment today.

The second Industrial Revolution can be dated between 1870 and 1914. When industries emerge and new opportunities are open, mass immigration can be found. In the early 1900s, there was segregation and discrimination between races. In addition, during the years between 1914 and 1918, World War One erupted. Between 1929 and 1933, the Great Depression took place and lastly between 1941 and 1945- World War Two occurred.

The national and federal government helped the United States grow into a self reliant nation with improvements in transportation, technology, manufacturing and the growth of the population. The concept of imperialism is one that has pervaded nearly every major society or empire throughout human history. It seems to be a natural consequence of societies growing in size, power, and knowledge. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries vast changes occurred in Western Europe (and soon spread elsewhere) that spurred a new round of imperialism the likes of which had not been seen before. The changes were the industrial revolution that was taking place. Countries were rapidly advancing to industrial societies producing much greater quantities of goods at much lower costs. The goods produced ranged everywhere from cotton textiles to military machinery, all of which would play important roles in rounds of imperialistic expansion that would follow. The imperialistic displays by Western European nations also brought about several other industrial revolutions in other regions including the Ottoman Empire, Russia, and Japan. I will take a look at how the industrial revolution encouraged imperialistic expansion, as well as some of the results of that expansion in other regions.

Furthermore, the nation was free of many trade tariffs that hampered industry in other European nations while featuring a real opportunity for upward movement in society which provided a great incentive for acquiring wealth. Britain also experienced tremendous population growth which provided a potential workforce as well as an increase in the demand for goods.
