Recommended: Impact of World War II

In 1941, the eastern front has grown to include many countries through out Europe. The final-solution was underway in Nazi occupied Germany and Jewish civilians began fleeing to other countries as a place for refuge. German citizens seem to be able to balance the sense of chaotic war and normal life relatively easy. What allied countries around the world didn’t know was that thousands were dying each day not soldiers, innocent civilians. German citizens didn’t seem to know anything about it. How could a whole civilization seem to not know anything about the murder of millions of innocent civilians? They played more of a roll than some might believe. Many German Lawyers and police officials at the time believed deeply in upholding the law( holocaust museum citation). When Hitler declared Jews to be "swine" and "dogs" and that they were to be moved and deported, the German citizens went along with it and didn’t ask questions( some citation for swine and dogs). Jews would be brought in front of courts for crimes that were petite or that they never did (museum again). Judges would follow the laws wrote down by Adolf and would persecute the innocent Jewish civilians for no reason. When cattle cars were to be loaded with Jewish civilians and shipped from the ghetto to concentration camps the police forces helped in doing this. German Police would help SS guards to move the Jews from the ghetto to cattle cars. German police officers, also called gestapos, also helped to hunt down and detain run away Jewish citizens through out the war. "Freedom is when one hears the bell at seven o'clock in the morning and knows it is the milkman and not the gestapo" - Georges Bidault (), this quote shows how at any moment if you were accused of anything mainly hiding and sheltering Jews or being a Jew the gestapo could show up and kill you or arrest you at

    Another method of dehumanizing the Jews was to make sure they turned on one another. Once the Jews began turning on each other, it kept them in their place and allowed them to mistrust one another even though the Germans were the real culprits. Since goods were scarce, it did not take long for the ghettos to descend into chaos. Stealing became a common practice amongst those who could not afford to buy illegally on the black market. Another way to make sure Jews constantly mistrusted one another was to make sure Jews were the ones who kept the ghettos running. Within the ghettos, a Jewish police force called Jüdischer Ordnungsdienst was created to keep Jews from escaping the ghettos. They wore armbands with an identifying marker and a badge. They were not permitted to use guns but were allowed to carry batons. The Jewish police reported any mishaps to the German police who were assigned to check perimeters outside the ghettos. They were recruited from two groups: lawyers and criminals. The criminal group was larger and soon became the dominating force behind the police and life inside the ghettos. In the Warsaw ghetto, a special group called Group 13 was created for the purpose of combatting the black market that thrived during this time. The group was also known as the Jewish Gestapo and had orders to report back to the German Gestapo. While officially the group’s job was to fight off the black market, unofficially the group extorted and blackmailed Polish sympathizers. They also were very skilled in tracking down Jews who had managed to not be sent to the ghettos. Both Bardach and Levi provide a commendable account of their long nightmarish experience including the impact it had on their lives and the lives of others. The willingness to survive was what drove these two men to achieve their goals and prevent their oppressors from achieving theirs.
