Actually, before doing the volunteer work, I thought that nursing was only a high salary job that only need to take care of people as the Nightingale defined nursing as “the act of utilizing the environment of the patient to assist him in his recovery”(Berman, Snyder & Frandsen, 2015, p.42). Moreover, the concept of caring in my mind were only helping people and a physical duty of a nurse. Therefore, I thought that the role of nursing was just a caregiver and only responsible for restoring health of ill client. However, after joining the volunteer work and watching the video about nursing, the experiences and the video change my concept about what are nursing, caring and the role and responsibilities in nursing. In October, I joined a volunteer …show more content…
When a group of the elderly came to take photos, I could not realize that most of the elderly could not walk freely. Therefore, I forgot to ask them whether they needed to seat down during photo taking and some of them nearly fell on the floor. Luckily, the nurses moved the chairs quickly to prevent the accident from happening. From this experience, I realize that I do not have enough experience to observe the environment and the clients carefully and because of my careless, making the elderly nearly fall on the floor which may become a extremely serious problem of my career and even the condition of client. Besides, I understand that I am not efficient as I could not realize problem quickly. Moreover, there were also things that went badly. During the lunch, as one nurse need to take care of a group of elderly, the nurses could not take care of every elderly at the same time and therefore some elderly were impatient and lost their temper. At that time, I should go to take care of them. However, as I do not have enough knowledge and experience to deal with elderly and I thought that most of the elderly are irascible so I was scared to serve them. From this thing, I thought I increased the afford of other volunteers and made the whole event …show more content…
For the strength, I think I am a self-discipline person because I always follow the rule since I am scared of the consequence of violating the rules. I think this behavior would be useful as nursing need a person that is highly-discipline. Besides, I am very passionate of the things that interest me, for example in the voluntary work, I would investigate the equipment of the elderly home. I think this attitude would be useful in my nursing career as there are many equipment that I don’t use before. However, there are also some weaknesses about me. First, I can’t observe the environment carefully but environment is essential for client as this can provide privacy. Second, I am not brave enough and therefore I am shamed of asking questions because I don’t want to make people be busy as they have many things needed to do. Third, my communication skill is not mature enough because when I talk with my friends, the content of my speech is quit direct. If I use this tone to talk with client, this might hurt the self-esteem of
Firstly, I chose to volunteer in the kitchen because the position required no special experience or skills in cooking. Therefore, I knew I could effectively work as a volunteer kitchen assistant (Expectancy). Secondly, I put a lot of effort in cleaning kitchen equipment and utensils and organizing the pantry to ensure the cooks had a smooth time cooking food. I knew that my actions would ensure that the food was cooked in time and served to numerous homeless people, who would, in turn, appreciate our efforts with thanks and smiles on their faces (instrumentality). Actually, our clients (the homeless people) did appreciate our efforts with thanks and smiles on their faces. This made me see the great impact I had participated in making on the lives of these homeless people by helping them get a healthy meal, which would extend their life by some time. I was really happy about this since I have always wanted to positively change people’s
Caring in the field of nursing is a very important aspect. The nurse should always care for their patient on a personal level. I have no nursing experience at all, so I can not say that I have actual experience caring for a person in a hospital. On the other hand, I have been involved in many instances where I had to stick out a helping hand.
I have soon come to realize how much more there is to nursing than just helping and healing. Nursing is not taking care of individuals it is caring for them. Caring is not only important when concerning nurse and patient relationships. It is important in every aspect of humanity. The culture of caring involves intervening programs that help to build caring behaviors among nurses. As nurses become stressed and become down on their life it has shown that caring for oneself before others is key in caring for patients. Also, throughout the years many theorists have proven that caring has come from many concepts and ideas that relate directly to ICU nursing. The knowledge I have gained from reading and reviewing these articles has and will help me to become a better nurse. It will help and provide the pathway for caring in my professional
...n the world today and people need all of the help and care that they can get. Nursing has changed over the years; however, what hasn’t changed is the dedication and compassion of the nursing profession.
The Theory of Nursing as Caring: A Model for Transforming Practice by Boykin & Schoenhofer recognizes the importance of identifying caring between the nurse and the one nursed as an applicable knowledge that the nurse must pursue. It is best stated that caring is not exclusive to nursing, yet it is uniquely lived in nursing (Alligood 2014).
In conclusion, Jean Watson’s theory of caring, a middle-range theory, provides essential framework and guidelines in nursing shortage problem. Nurses who exposed to caring theory have moral and ethical obligations to care for others during challenging situations. Patients, families and other professionals depend on nursing profession, their expertise and knowledge for best patient
According to Kristen Swanson’s theory of caring, caring consists of Knowing, Being with, Doing for, Enabling, and maintaining belief. She believes that the environment and what is in the environment can affect people, either positively or negatively. As a nursing student, I possess the qualities of enabling, doing for, and being with. These qualities are implanted in me via my upbringing, culture, religious belief, and life experience/encounters(my environment). “Enabling” is the nurses’ responsibility to help the make a transition into the unknown.
“Nursing encompasses an art, a humanistic orientation, a feeling for the value of the individual, and an intuitive sense of ethics, and of the appropriateness of action taken’, said Myrtle Aydelott (Hammarskjold, 2000). Nurses have our patients trust with their lives every day. These patients have needs that must be understood and met, whether; physical, psychological, or emotional. Nurses must provide nonjudgmental care to those in need, regardless of culture, religion, lifestyle choices, financial status, or hues of the human race. To quote Jean Watson, nursing theorist, “I am here to care for others, regardless of where they came from” (Hammarskjold, 2000). I believe that the nursing profession chose me because I have always had a calling to help those in need. Nursing
Caring is a very important component of nursing. Caring is important to nursing because it is a nurse 's job to care for the patient and make sure all is well. If a nurse was not caring, than the patient would not feel safe and not receive the best care possible. Nurses have to use all of the key characteristics mentioned in order to achieve excellent patient
Each individual gets to a point in life whereby they assess their internal qualities, people reflect their profession aspirations and attempt to see which careers will make them happy in their lives. It is also important for a person to consider whether they have the qualities needed for a particular profession and also consider the available resources that will help him or her reach their set goals (Chafey, Rhea, Shannon, & Spencer, (1998). Every human being has weaknesses and strengths in their personal or professional aspirations. Having strength means that someone has the physical and mental power to perform things in a successful manner. On the other hand, weaknesses are the drawbacks, the inadequate lack of strength or power to accomplish important goals in life, and every human has some potential of being a leader in some way (American Association of Critical Care Nurses (2006). This paper will discuss the outcome results inventory on the nurse as a manager, it illustrates personal strength and weaknesses in relation to personal life and professional aspirations. The paper will also discuss planning for career, disciplines in personal expedition, practice
From my point of view, the concept of care or caring is very complex. It includes concern, attention, love, kindness, compassion, protection, trust, support, responsibility. On the one hand, caring for somebody is a very hard work, but on the other hand, caring is a very rewarding experience. As a parent and a wife, I can say that when you care for your loved ones you create the intimate connections that makes you feel happy and whole. As a nursing student, I would say that caring in nursing is even broader concept compared to the personal caring for family.
Volunteering enables a person to develop new skills that he or she would otherwise not have been able to develop. Unlike most other organizations, a charitable organization is happy to give positions to passionate, though inexperienced, individuals who desire to help others and benefit the community. Therefore, an individual with little experience in a field of work can gain meaningful skills that he or she can use in the future. For example, while I volunteered at the hospital this summer, I learned about the daily work lives and professional duties of doctors and nurses. Had I not volunteered, I would not have learned about these things. I was always interested in the medical field, but volunteering at the hospital let me explore my interests and en...
A reflection of my volunteering experience can be summarized in two words: Life-changing. It is hard to explain the feelings that occur when you involve yourself in selfless acts for your community, such as volunteering. There is a feeling in your heart that you cannot ignore, maybe it is the happiness you feel or the overflow of emotions in helping others. In other words, it is a feeling in which you want to share with others. Maybe with a friend, maybe a classmate, maybe a family member, or maybe even a stranger. Either way, spreading how life-changing volunteering can be is a great start to making a positive change in your community by simply by involving others.
These various characteristics help to avoid some avoidable mistakes that can be unforeseen. I have quite some strengths that has helped me so far in my nursing career and has also helped me to be one of the best nurses around. Braveness is one important strength that I have that has helped me in my nursing career. Braveness has propelled me to be able to accept any challenges and to be able to face it in my nursing practice. I am not afraid to explore different areas in nursing due to this distinctive strength that I possess. The strength has also helped me in furthering my education without fear of failing in my chosen
I always treat each person as a unique individual with unique life experiences. I treat my patients with respect and address their cultural beliefs and values. I pride myself with having a caring attitude and want to help and heal people from their illness physically and psychologically. I think nursing can be both science and art. I think to be a successful nurse; the nurse needs to master the art of caring and continually learn and apply knowledge of nursing science throughout their career. Without caring or nurturing the nurse cannot connect with the patient and trust will not develop, without a trusting relationship, therapeutic nursing will not be able to occur. Therefore, I feel caring is at the forefront of all successful nursing interactions. This is not to negate the value that science brings to nursing. A competent nurse must be able to have a variety of knowledge and skill. The next part of the paper will discuss the metaparadigm of
