Each individual gets to a point in life whereby they assess their internal qualities, people reflect their profession aspirations and attempt to see which careers will make them happy in their lives. It is also important for a person to consider whether they have the qualities needed for a particular profession and also consider the available resources that will help him or her reach their set goals (Chafey, Rhea, Shannon, & Spencer, (1998). Every human being has weaknesses and strengths in their personal or professional aspirations. Having strength means that someone has the physical and mental power to perform things in a successful manner. On the other hand, weaknesses are the drawbacks, the inadequate lack of strength or power to accomplish important goals in life, and every human has some potential of being a leader in some way (American Association of Critical Care Nurses (2006). Once upon a time, my best friend, Bryan Martinez, often heard his mother’s medical conversations with friends. One day at school, our teacher confronted Mrs. Martinez and told her that she was able tell that Bryan was a son from a nurse. Apparently there was an incident at school where a little boy was acting out and Bryan told our teacher that the little boy was agitated, and to give him some medication to calm him down. In healthcare it is very important to have strong leaders, especially in the nursing profession. A nurse leader typically uses several styles of leadership depending on the situation presented; this is known as situational leadership. It is important that the professional nurse choose the right style of leadership for any given situation to ensure their employees are performing at their highest potential. Depending on which leadership style a nurse leader uses, it can affect staff retention and the morale of the employees as well as nurse job satisfaction (Azaare & Gross, 2011.) “Nursing leaders have the responsibility to create and maintain a work environment which not only promotes positive patient outcomes but also positively influences teams and individual nurses” (Malloy & Penprase, 2010.) The following essay is a reflective paper on an event that I encountered as a student nurse during my first clinical placement in my first year of study. The event took place in a long term facility. I believe that nursing should be a holistic approach, dealing with a patient’s body, mind, and soul. It is definitely a physically demanding job, but equally as important is the demand for emotional commitment. My past academic performance, as well as my personal qualities, provides the foundation for my career. A core characteristic of a successful nurse is teamwork and the ability to act as the liaison between the patients and the other members of the patients’ care teams. Besides working well in a team, it is also important to seek out help when necessary. Another vital quality is culture competency. The career i chose is a branch of the medical field. I chose a career in nursing, more specifically the career path of a registered nurse. This career consists of providing care for people of all ages and helping them with managing their conditions. I chose this career because my mother is an rn and my family has a strong presence in the medical field. It is important to understand the education or training requirements, skills, or talents needed, salary, benefits offered, and the duties for a particular career when making this decision.
Three years ago I came to this great country following a goal, a dream, and looking for new opportunities. I never thought that today I would be studying nursing. Honestly, these ideas never crossed my mind after having been a doctor for 20 years in Cuba. Being an immigrant brings overcome barriers where there is no time for fears and doubts, which only have to pursue a particular aim for which to fight relentlessly. Few times we find good opportunities to study, and this one, in particular, I would not lose it. Studying nursing for me would be like starting over, although not entirely, this would allow me to get closer to what I 've always liked, patient care. Simultaneously, it filled me with many questions: Classes in a foreign language would allow me to interact with teachers and at the same time learn from them? How lessons would be taught in the college courses? How would be the interaction with the classmates?
