I use the servant leadership approach to serving others in the nursing profession. I follow the servant leadership principles like listening, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight and commitment to others (Spears, n.d.). These principles enable me to build a collaborative and productive community at the workplace (Casterlow, n.d.) As per Dr. DelHousaye, when one serves others, it should be for the betterment of others, not for the self (DelHousaye, 2014). This is possible only by knowing others as for how they are. Larry C. Spears (2010) and Kent Keith (2016) note a few characteristics of one who is a servant leader. The characteristics proposed by Spears (2010) are listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to others growth, and community building. With this, the goal of providing quality care is key and can be accomplished through a theory called servant leadership. In this style of leadership and management, the entire team has input into decision making based on the organization’s values and ideals. Servant leaders create devoted followers in response to the positive attention they give (Nursing Community Journal, 2015).
The importance of servant leadership should not be underestimated and it can be simplified and embodied in one timeless phrase: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. When applied to leadership the result can be phenomenal. Those who wish to serve do so with their hearts, it is not forced nor is it with resentment. The servant leader serves out of acceptance and ownership of their ability and duty.
Hunter shed light on the topic of servant leadership, which is one I was unfamiliar with until reading this book. This book opened my eyes to the importance of servant leadership and demonstrated ways it will serve me in my career as a nurse. Although servant leadership embodies many characteristics, I believe that the qualities of greatest importance are discussed within this paper. One point the book touched on that resonated with me was the meaning of love as a verb. I had never thought of love in that way, but I think it is an important concept that should be applied to leadership. My goal for my future is to learn to love others through my actions. I hope to accomplish this by establishing trust and demonstrating commitment, and remaining respectful and appreciative of each member of my team by maintaining a sense of humility. I expect that doing this will aid me in forming meaningful relationships throughout my life and help me become an effective servant
Steward or Servant-leadership characterizes a model of leadership in which the leader undertakes a supportive, service orientated role among stakeholders and employees. The leader assists by building the skills of employees, minimizing obstacles, and enabling creative problem solving and innovation. “The characteristics associated with servant leadership include incorporating active listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of people, and community building” (Spears, 2002). Servant leadership can be thought of as an inverted triangle where the leader is supporting the organization at the point. As a result of this leadership style, leaders are more in tune with their teams. They have more insight on their team and the inner workings of their organizations.

Being a nurse leader involves lifelong learning and advancement. I believe treating others how you want to be treated is a good way to be successful in leadership. Everyone makes mistakes and it is how we learn from them that makes us a better person. I will be a nurse leader that is honest and encouraging. I will use personal experiences to relate to my team. I will adopt characteristics from various leadership styles to form my own. If the situation calls for a more autocratic role such as during an emergency or code, that is the style I will use. If the democratic or transformational approach is more appropriate, then that is the style I will lean towards.

In healthcare it is very important to have strong leaders, especially in the nursing profession. When we sacrifice our time to help someone in need, whether it is a great or small need, we become a part of their life and can help alleviate heavy burdens. Making time to help people in need creates opportunities for us to develop new and lasting relationships.
