In 1893, Simon Pokagon spoke at the Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition. He was a prominent tribal leader who was known for this speech. So much so, it was printed and turned into an informative pamphlet. The speech encompassed American history and it’s push Westward, detailing the destruction of the Native lands and culture forever. The definition of segregation is the enforced separation of different racial groups in a country, community, or establishment. The Special Olympics date back all the way to the year 1968. Many see these Games as a time to honor someone who is able to “overcome” a task, but author William Peace sees this as an insulting portrayal of people with disabilities. Peace is a multidisciplinary school teacher and scholar that uses a wheel chair and writes about the science behind disabilities and handicaps. As a physically handicapped individual, Peace is able to observe a negative portrayal of disabled persons. On November 10th, 1963 Malcolm X, later known as el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz, delivered his “Message to the Grass Roots” speech to the Northern Negro Grass Roots Leadership Conference held at the King Solomon Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan. 1963 was a year of change, and a year of turmoil for African-Americans and the nation was in the midst of the (African-American) civil rights movement. The Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892 and “by the time of the Second World War, many states had made the daily recitation of the pledge mandatory for teachers and students” (“The Pledge of Allegiance,” par. 2). In 1954 congress passed a law inserting the phrase “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance. Students in schools started to refuse to stand and recite the pledge along with their teacher and classmates and as a result they would be punished for not doing so.
