In essence, motivation plays an important role in our daily working environment. This is because motivation leads to more productive employees. However, the methods of motivating employees have to be enriched from time to time as employees are more demanding and that more concerned about their needs than never before (Tay, and Diener, 2011). It is the aim of this study to ascertain the major motivation theories including its history, foundation, model, and application, the strengths and weaknesses as well as the various options and strategies an organization can use to apply in order to motivate employees.

Generally, a person commencing their career will be very concerned with physiological needs such as stable income security needs adequate wages and a safe work environment and will also need a good salary to meet the needs of our family .Employees whose lowest level needs have not been met will make job decisions based on compensation, stability concerns and security. Effective interpersonal relations therefore are necessary. Managers can create an environment where staff cooperation is rewarded. This will encourage interpersonal effectiveness. With these needs satisfied, an employee will want his higher level needs of esteem and self-actualization met. Job enrichment, Cross-training, job and special assignments are accepted methods for making work more rewarding. Never the less, allowing employees to participate in decision making on operational matters is a preferred method for meeting an employee’s esteem needs.
