Introduction
There are a multitude of design theories that designers use on a daily basis in order to create spaces for people to enjoy based on past research. Design theory refers to understanding the methods, strategies, research and analysis of the practice of design. One of these design theories is functionalism and it focuses on the function of a building or space followed by the form of said space. Functionalism attempts to have necessary aspects satisfied first to then be naturally followed by architectural beauty.

Designers in this era would design buildings with a lot of ornamentation but Louis Sullivan went against that with form following function which got rid of a lot of decorative features. By the 1930’s, functionalism began to be discussed as an aesthetic approach rather than a matter of design integrity.
Concepts
There are three main concepts when it comes to functionalism: -Function -Utility -Fitness All of these three concepts are important because they all lead to the beauty of the building or object. These three concepts also relate to each other through context, quality, and Intent which in the end leads them towards the beauty.
Evaluation Questions With each of these concepts comes questions that need to be thought about and answered in order for a space or object to fully grasp the functionalism atmosphere. These questions that need to be asked are but not limited to: 1. Function -What is the function? 2. Fitness -What is the appropriateness or suitability? 3.
