To analyze this event that occurred further, peer-reviewed literature will be examined. I believe the key issue from this event was a lack of control of my emotions. I felt like I froze up and was not able to perform or think clearly because I was not able to put the fear of him dying on me aside which affected patient safety. As a result, I will critically examine the concept of stress management and how it affected my patient’s safety, from my view as a student with knowledge, skills and previous experience.
One of the key factors in this event was stress, which affected my course of actions. With personal previous experience, stress has been a problem before. For example, I felt stressed when I think about having to performing a skill for the first time. I was able to combat this by reviewing the skill quickly prior actually performing the skill. Having the time to review the procedure allowed me to feel less stressed going into the situation. However, being in a situation that is time limited and where a patient is suffering does not give me the time to think clearly. In a study conducted by Buuman, Mank, Beijer & Olff, (2011), they found it was common for nurses to experience traumatic stress when they witness their patient suffering in acute situations and the best way they found to decrease post traumatic stress was to use the active coping. How the individual choses to cope to the situation is an important indicator on how the person will react to the same situation a second time. Lazarus and Folkman’s (1984), the creators of theory of cognitive appraisal, indicated individuals go through primary and secondary appraisals in response to stress which then affect the way they cope. While analyzing the two sources, I believe ...

Overall, based on my initial assumptions related to this situation on my course of actions, I found my beliefs and values were evident in this situation. I value respect and honesty. I believe it is important to be honest and to notify someone or to ask for help when you are unaware of what to do. Although, I felt incompetent at the time, I have learned a great deal of things and what I need to work on as a future nurse. As for respect as one of the values I truly believe is important, I believe that was shown when I realize I was not respond independently considering it was my second shift back. I respected the role of my preceptor by letting her guide me on she would handle the situation as preceptor and respected the importance of patient safety.
From an intrapersonal viewpoint, I noted a very prominent fluctuation among individual behaviors. I noted nurses and other healthcare professionals who radiated a consistent sense of urgency and stress in response to the critical
These conditions require nurses to possess exceptional coping skills (Bryant, 1994). Stress can be perceived as a stimulus or a response. Sullivan (1993) identifies stress as a very real experience, but most experiences are not stressful in them and are only perceived as such by the individual. Some nurses may just be "tougher" than others. Hardiness may be the key personality characteristic not just for preventing emotional exhaustion, but for turning stressful events into meaningful challenges (Bryant,
Everyone everywhere has experienced stress with something they have dealt with in life. Whether it is school, paying bills, managing a busy schedule or work, stress affects everyone. Although everyone experiences stress, many people don’t actually know what stress is. Stress is the physical response of the body to harmful situations that threaten someone’s well being. When someone says “stress”, the word is automatically associated with a negative effect on people but small doses of stress can benefit a person, if used to correctly. Everyone’s stress level is different and the amount of stress that can be handled varies from person to person but a stress overload will not benefit anyone. “When you feel threatened, a chemical reaction occurs in your body to allow you to act in a way to prevent injury” (“Stress Management Health Center”). The chemical that is released when stressed is known as cortisol, also known a stress hormone. “Cortisol is like a long-term form of adrenaline, produced in the adrenal gland when the body is under pressure” (“The Effects of Stress on Your Reproductive Health and Fertility”). Adrenaline is also released to send the body into, what is known as, emergency action (“Stress Symptoms, Signs and Causes”). This emergency action speeds up reactions preformed by the body and the mind. This is a way of protecting the body. While in emergency action, this stress caused by threatening situations can save your life. In emergency situations, you are given “extra strength to defend yourself, for example, or spurring you to slam on your brakes to avoid a car accident” (“Stress Management Health Center”). Signs of being in this emergency action are a racing heart, blood pressure rises, quickening of breath and tigh...
According to the American Institute of Stress, stress can be defined as an individual’s response, physical, mental or emotional, to an event that causes a demand for change (Selye, 1936). For athletes, that demand for change can be caused by an injury, which ultimately can have a significant impact on overall stress levels. While a physical injury can cause psychological stress, mental trauma can similarly affect an athlete physically. An athlete’s psychological stability has a great affect on an athlete’s susceptibility to pain and can alter the response to and recovery from an injury (Ahern, 1997).
My clinical week was emotional and physically draining this week. I enjoyed being the lead on Thursday because it gave me the opportunity to stop and observe. The nurses and the CNAs were very stressed out, and I clearly saw the effect on the patients. For instance, one of the CNAs asked me to help her with an occupied bed change. I was excited. However, she kept passing a bunch of comments of how hard nursing is and how she did not want to be old. I did not acknowledge any of her comments. Perhaps she thought she could express herself (as a result of her stress) in front the patient since the patient was non verbal and could not understand. I felt very bad. I was very uncomfortable and sad. For me, it doesn’t matter whether the patient
...l like my mind is wondering all over the place on overload. Oh, and my biggest problem with stress are all those sleepless nights where I just toss and turn. What I do to try and alleviate my stress is tell myself to slow down, one thing at a time, and convince myself that everything will get done in due time”. This patient explained the effects of stress and how her body reacts to it. Everyone goes through stress, whether they like it or not. It can be good or it can be bad but people have to go through stress or else their life would be boring and pointless.
For my first clinical observation, I was assigned to the trauma unit and it was not what I expected it to be. I thought the trauma unit would be fast pace and there would be nurses and doctors rushing everywhere, however, I did not see any of that. Instead, it was quite peaceful and this was probably because my clinical observation was from 10-12 p.m. When I met up with my senior nurse, she showed me a binder that contained all of her patients’ diagnoses, lab reports, treatments, and vital signs, which was a lot to take in because most of the terms she used, I had no idea what they were. After looking at the reports, she showed me a patient who had gunshot wounds on his back and abdomen. I could tell he was in a lot of pain by the tone of
According to Brougham (2009), “College women reported higher overall level of stress and greater use of emotion-focused coping strategies than college men” (Brougham, 2009, pg 85). Recent avoidance of my problems is not helping to solve them. As a college student, my two main stressors are family problems and night-eating. Considering that the old coping methods are not working, a new method needs to be taken into effect.
The focus of every health care professional is the patient and the goal is to return the patient to optimum health where the patient can be independent. When the patient’s safety is being compromised it’s everyone’s job to fix the problem and make sure that it doesn’t happen again. However, there’s a dark side to nursing. The nurse is one of the few health care workers that have the most daily contact with the patient. The nurse plays a very important role in the patients care from teaching to simply being a listener while withholding any judgement. When the nurse to patient ratio isn’t balanced, it causes nurse burnout. Nurse burnout is when the nurse becomes “physically, emotionally, and mentally exhausted” (Michigan, S. S. (n.d.). News.

Each individual possesses individual strengths and weaknesses when it comes to school, work, as well as life in general. It is important to be able to be able to identify those weaknesses in order to work on strengthening them, which ultimately will lead to lessening of the negative effects that influence daily life. For me personally, with nursing school, work, homework, family, friends, and other daily stressors, I struggle to adequately manage it all. Specifically when looking at how I manage my time, as well as how I manage my stress levels, I see a correlation with very negative effects. I am going to work on
Stress is a natural occurrence that most every person will experience at some point in his or her life. A stressor, as defined by Potter, Perry, Stockert, and Hall (2013), is any kind of event or situation that a person encounters in their environment that requires him or her to change and adapt. When a person responds to stress, his or her coping mechanisms and actions are individualized. No two people are going to handle stressful situations and cope with experiences the same exact way. Each person is unique and has his or her own customized way of dealing with stress. While some people are very open and honest about what they are dealing with, others keep their feelings bottled up. I find this topic so
The phenomenon of stress is presented in our lives more and more strongly. In the media, on the internet or at the doctor, we hear about it constantly. But what exactly is this phenomenon? “A large number of studies during the past several decades have explored relationships among environmental stimuli, psychological processes and organismic responses. Those studies that have investigated the various ways in which environmental changes or the perceived threat of such changes lead organisms to make specific adaptive responses are often subsumed under the rubric of stress research.”( Field, Mccabe, Schneiderman, 1985).
People are always at risk when it comes to stress because it is something they deal with on daily basis. Stress can be defined as a psychological or a physiological reaction that happens when an individual comes in contact with a stressful event. When people think of stress they tend to think that stress is only bad meanwhile there can be a good reactions when it comes to stress. People need a certain amount of stress to work well and have the energy and willpower to achieve goals that they have set up for themselves. If life was not stressful we would all be bored and we would not give our 100 percent when we worked. Bad stress can lead to complete shot down. Someone being exposed to stressful events on a regular basis can result to having mental health problems. There are many different ways to deal with stress such as hobbies and exercise. Some people are not well educated when it comes to stress disorders. This subject should be more elaborated because if untreated stress can lead into bigger or worst mental health problems. Having poor education on the subject can interfere with getting the proper kind of help someone would need. This research essay will be talking about all the different kind of bad stress that can be harmful to a person. This research essay will also talk about all the information a person would need in order to be educated on the subject. (Allard)
Stressors are both physiological and psychological demands placed on an individual from both internal and external environments that can disturb homeostasis. This disruption requires an action to return the body to a balance. Being able to recognize, understand, and cope with stress is critical to overall health and well being of an individual. The ability to cope with stress productively can alter the outcome of illness and prevent negative health outcomes altogether. Each person experiences and perceives stress differently both physiologically, psychologically, and can portray it differently externally. The way in which each person handles stress can influence the path for care they pursue if illness is present. In the absence of remedial
