The Reward of Ambition A higher education has recently been thought of as just a right of passage. Many individuals also discern that the cost and risk of obtaining a degree outweigh the opportunity for one to further their knowledge in an environment that they have never experienced before. Students are often fearful of becoming independent by being held personally accountable for their learning. This new setting, however, possesses numerous benefits that too many high school graduates unfortunately overlook. One of the social benefits of earning a college degree is that the student is both encouraged and required to interact with many unique viewpoints and opinions that may or may not be different to their own and whether or not they agree with them. As a result, the students have been introduced to new ideas that may expand and broaden their mental view. In the article, “The Social Benefits of a Higher Education”, author Shirley M. Tilghman reports her topic within the Princeton Alumni Weekly. She states, “A college education is the most effective way I know of transcending the distinctions—whether of ancestry, wealth, or race—that fragment our society. By educating Princetonians of every Tiger stripe; by addressing the under-representation of students from low- and moderate-income families, we strengthen the social and economic fabric of our nation and equip it to face our increasingly competitive global marketplace with confidence.” Tilghman provides the perfect example of the positive social effects that may result from experiencing the unique college environment.
