In “College Is a Waste of Time and Money,” Caroline Bird, a college lecturer makes very good and valid points that college is wasting time and money. She describes how society has pushed students into getting higher education right out of high school. Leaving us with the question, are students getting a higher degree of education to better their future or to keep them busy and paying an institution. Throughout her text she gives different reason as to why she believes college is a waste of time and money. She first gives the example of what would happen if college students were to put all the money they spent on school into savings. “Many institutions have begun to use hard-sell, Madison-Avenue techniques to attract students. They sell college like soap, promoting features they think students want” (Bird 372). This is a strong statement to use because it seems like some kind of item of need in everyday life for young adults. Colleges have gotten to the point where they have become so much like a business that they feel the need to satisfy the customer on what they are selling so they include all sorts of programs and curricular activities that could please the new students. Not only does it seem as if they are being pressured into attending college by their high school counselors and parents but also by their own classmates as most of them are going so many don’t want to feel out of place and they attend anyways. Due to society make it seem as if college is a necessity people feel the need to attend but also as if it is just a way to “temporarily get them out of the way…” (Bird 374) Today even some sociologist believe that college has become an institution so people just accept it without question. That’s wrong because people make it seem as if you won’t get far in life if you don’t have or get a college degree. Meaning that it could potentially be a waste of time since it’s not focusing on what their future is planned on. By not focusing on preparing the student for the job they are planning on doing for their career it makes them feel like they are in need of more schooling to be better prepared or none at all. Along with having to attend more school they are also paying for more classes that have nothing to do with the major they are wanting to accomplish. Even when they assist you with finding a career it is not the one you planned on doing. It is along the lines of it but not exactly what you look for by then they try to convince you of another branch of the career that will make more money or push for better success when in reality it will only keep you in school longer. “Teacher, engineers, and other I’ve talked to said that on the job they rarely use what they learned in school” (Bird 378). Meaning that it is actually quite true that many of the courses taken throughout these years of college are in fact pointless and doesn’t fulfil the actual requirement for the job field they are aspiring for. Making it seem as if they are just paying for courses to stay busy until there are job openings in the field in which they are looking for. This can make students feel unneeded in the adult life also it can make them feel as if they are just being put
