My passion for surgery began to develop when my sister attended physician assistant school. Through every learned skill that came to obtain her degree, hearing about the surgeries she performed was the most exhilarating aspect. It is the rewarding outcomes and intellectual challenges that were so captivating, that my desire to become part of the surgical world could not be contained. Knowing the compassion I have for others and the inspiration of healing through surgery, I knew I would enjoy both patient care and assisting the surgeon. This led me to research careers in the surgical field, where I found an interesting topic of medical-surgical nursing and the roles they perform.

The intentions behind this are for quicker patient discharges, better prepare patients and caregivers and lessen the likelihood of re-hospitalization (Lattavo, 2014.) Exhibiting how this career choice takes special individuals with a particular skill set to accomplish and maintain the goals of the medical-surgical field. From employing their powerful voices (Lattavo, 2014) to profoundly influencing healthcare for decades to come (Singleton, 2010,) both Lattavo and Singleton have taught me that medical-surgical nurses are one of the hardest working groups. Singleton proves this when writing about the continuing changes in the roles of a medical-surgical nurses and how to prepare for the future through research, education, practice and advocacy (Singleton, 2010.) Using these tools will help medical-surgical nurses remain connected to the healthcare community as a whole.
