On the headline of The New York Times, “Princess Cruise Lines has pleaded guilty to seven felony charges and will pay $40 million after employees on a cruise ship were caught dumping oiled waste into the seas and lying to cover up their actions, officials with the Justice Department said” (Rogers, 2016). Although this quotation came from one of the most popular newspaper, both online and printed, not many people take notice of this article and the problem that is being highlighted. Trash and waste are created every day, more and more are created faster than they are decomposed into atoms. Walking down the beach is a fantastic idea for couples who are going on a date, especially at night quietly enjoying the relaxing sky view along with the peaceful wave sounds from the ocean. All these held true and sounds very dreamy-like until the ocean is actually no longer the ocean that human once knew. News about trash being drifted ashore along the coastline appears more often than ever before. The trash that mostly surfaces to the shore are plastic, anything from plastic bottle to plastic bags, and even plastic wraps from overly packaged products that consumers purchased. The WWF stated in one of their information pages about ocean problems that, “Plastic bags, balloons, glass bottles, shoes, packaging material – if not disposed of correctly, almost everything we throw away can reach the sea. Plastic garbage, which decomposes very slowly, is often mistaken for food by marine animals” (Marine Problems: Pollution). A common misleading thought that occurs in many households is the idea of “I threw away my trash into the trash can. I paid the trash company to eliminate the trash, what they do with it is no longer my concern or my responsibility, those trash no longer exist in my world.” Then again, with the trash fee that the trash company charges the households, there are only so much that the trash company can do when it comes to “eliminate” the trash that they have collected. It is not a surprise to learn about trash companies dumping excess trash into the ocean as a method of “eliminating” trash. Not only do trash companies dump trash into the ocean, tourists and ocean-side visitors also contribute in dumping trash into the ocean, both knowingly and unknowingly, which is quite disturbing.
