The media portrays the image of nursing through different perspectives that negatively or positively impact the audience. It appears that the media often presents misconceptions of nursing, however, there are some positive portrayals of nursing. After collecting data, this paper explores the positive reports within the media in comparison with the reality of professional nursing. The information obtained comes from CINHAL, a search engine that acquires scholarly articles regarding professional nursing. Upon reading three articles, it is apparent that they all present different aspects of nursing in relevance to other sources of media. Particularly, Jackie Peyton, the head nurse physically and behaviourally presents a professional nursing image by offering therapeutic communication, confidentiality and effective critical thinking. Within the hospital she is referred to as “Nurse Jackie”, who appropriately wears nursing scrubs, clinical shoes, hair in a bun and minimal makeup; presenting the substantial image of professional appearance in reality. Jackie illustrates her role by being a leader with educated skills that cares, advocates and helps clients understand their health needs. Research by Hoeve, Jansen and Roodbol (2013) defines the caring characteristic that contributes to the nurse’s professional identity. The article also focuses on defining the nurse’s professional identity, “the values and beliefs held by nurses that guide her/his thinking, actions and interactions with the patient” (Hoeve et al., 2013, p.303). This implies that nurses must sculpt their thinking to benefit the primary objective of benefiting the client. In relevance to Nurse Jackie, Jackie’s behaviour portrays her professional identity through her ethical thinking of providing confidentiality, which guides her actions to offer privacy to the clients. For example, nurse Jackie secures the hospitalized client’s data and closes the curtain to promote client safety and dignity. Through conveying thinking of values and beliefs into actions, this allows the client to feel comfortable which entrusts the nurse to gain
