There are moments when a student stays up extremely late working on their homework, a project, or studying for a test. They are consistently wishing for additional time to complete their tasks and assignments. Schools, over the course of the years, have developed a schedule and has added an extra period called Tutorial. Tutorial is usually used in a block schedule. Instead of having six periods, students are now having seven altogether, but depending on a school policy the conditions of Tutorial may vary. The time for each class is deducted by a few minutes and this is used to construct a tutorial period. Tutorial is a period where students get to spend their time working on their homework. It is a period which lasts about a total of one hour. Tutorial allows students the ability to go to a class of their choice, especially a class they need help in. Teachers are also allowed send or request students to their class to make up a test or missing work. During a tutorial period, students are allowed to work on their homework, study for an upcoming test, or ask a teacher for help. Tutorial is not a period where students get to only work on their homework, but they also get to communicate with their teachers, classmates, and friend for help with school work. Without help from a teacher, students are most likely to become confused and end up sleeping late trying to finish homework or study for a test from a previous lesson they didn’t quite understand. Extended class periods and block scheduling will improve student’s grades and can diminish their stress level significantly. A normal day in block scheduling consists of only four classes a day, alternating each day. These classes would last 120 minutes each, with the same 5 minute passing periods in between classes. This scheduling gives teachers more time to explain their lesson. It also gives students time to recover from the late nights due to sports and other activities because they only have four classes a day. Their homework for these classes isn’t due for another day, so they don’t have to stress over getting it done. 120 minute classes combined with blocked scheduling increases the amount of time teachers have for instruction and will overall increase the student’s knowledge, in turn, raising their grades.
Day after day, late students are punished or end up in detention due to short passing periods. Having short passing periods can make a student’s grade go down or worse when students are late to class. This can be prevented by extending passing periods to 10 minutes. Although the staff at H.P.M.S may disapprove, but in the long run, they will see the effects of having longer passing periods has on students. Because of the short time of passing periods, students at Happy Place Middle School are petitioning to extend their passing period time to 10 minutes. In short, some of the positive effects are that students can get to class on time, and gives students and teachers time to prepare.
Sleep: it helps to keep our learning to be consolidate. Students need to have a good night sleep when they have school next day. Also, the next day of school, the student will have more energy and patience to study, to think and to take notes. On average, high school students receive about 3.5 hours of homework each night and elementary school students are getting about three times the amount that is recommended, which is ten minutes per grade, so 10 minutes for 1st grade and 50 minutes for 5th grade. Homework takes time to do after school and extracurriculars. If a student goes to school at 9:00 and gets out at 4:00, then goes to an after-school activity from 4:00 to 6:00, they will come home and have dinner from about 6:30 to 7:15, which means that they will probably start homework at around 7:30. This means that high school student would be up until about 11:00 finishing their homework, that’s without factoring in how much time the students will waste. This leaves students with less than the recommended 9 hours of sleep. Students that have to stay up that late for homework will be tired in the morning, even if their schools do start later.

When in the course of life events, their comes a time in a student’s life where he/she can no longer manage all their homework assignments given to them by their teacher. As a student gets older they begin to have a harder time in concentrating in their school needs. This becomes worse if one is involved in any academic or athletic programs after or before school.
Sleep deprivation for students in school can affect mood, health, ability to pay attention, deal with stress, and retain information, but that's not even everything that is affected. Students are not getting enough sleep to sustain them. As a result of waking up too early for school, students do not function properly. Due to students being tired in the morning, they would learn more in classrooms if school started later.

If schools continue to start early, the more frustrated you can be around peers. The lack of sleep makes people crabby and irritated. Homework is a major problem when it comes to sleep. In other words, students force themselves to finish their homework, and strive to succeed in school. All of the work that they do can make them irritable around friends, and takes time away from activities.
This would lengthen the class period in the day, but limit to four class periods a day rather than eight a day. A student could take eight classes and will alternate the days in which the student would take the class. There are more forms of block scheduling, but they take the basic format of either the ‘4x4’ block schedule or the ‘A/B’ block schedule. Homework has been an integral part of education since children started to be educated. Recently however, homework has begun to be assigned more and more often to students, especially in the United States, as it has begun to fall further and further behind countries like China, Singapore, and Japan. Homework is anything assigned by teachers to be completed by the students either at home, or just on their own time. The workload for students has gotten to the point where more and more parents are starting to notice the load for their kids has gotten to be too much. Many kids in high school, even 9th and 10th graders, can have 3 or even 4 hours of homework every night. In the past couple years, homework has gotten so out of control that parents are starting to speak out, and protest the amount of homework that students get each night (Marzano). In addition, studies have been done to determine the value of homework, but overall, the results are mixed at best (Kohn). Even studies that show a positive relationship between homework and test scores, among other things, show that homework is only effective when assigned in a moderate amount. Too much homework can be counter-productive, or have adverse effects on students. Students with too much homework can perform worse on tests, and develop serious physical and mental health problems from too much stress or lack of sleep.
The school has to look out for every student especially those who take advanced classes or classes that requiring a great amount of time let alone a ton of work due in a limited time period most likely faster. Now the student that is trying to get the most out of school ends up staying up until every last details of the assignments is done. In addition, that leaves the student exhausted and unprepared physically for the next day, but will push themselves to the limit. Lesson study refers to a Japanese program of developing teachers’ profession during their teaching experience. It is a translation from Japanese word Jugyokenkyo which literally means study or research (Fernandez & Yshida, 2012). Fernandez and Yushida (2012) define it as “lessons that are object of ones’ study”. It means that through lesson study, the teachers explore their teaching-based research goals through the several steps which they have defined them earlier. These steps include: collaborative planning, observation, discussion, revising, re-teaching, and sharing reflection. Also, Dudley (2014) defines lesson study as a procedure in which teams of teachers do planning, teaching, observing, and analyzing learning and teaching collaboratively.
Students are bombarded with hours of homework every night and it interferes with their lives. They are tired of staying up late at night to finish their homework or a paper that is due the next day. They should not have this workload that they have every night because they also have to live their childhood. Life is too short to be staying up until 11:00 because of schoolwork. Homework is unhealthy for students and it is not academically beneficial for them.
The quality of teaching in a classroom makes the biggest learning outcome. Effective teaching leads to the improvement in a student’s achievement. Measuring effective teaching against the progress of a student is a must. It is the belief of all schools that all students must have equalising starting points which means that no matter what background a child comes from they should have the same opportunity for learning.
