Then leads them so they can find their way to lasting change and an aligned purposeful life.
This is the kind of coach that all other coaches aspire to be.
In fact this is the key reason many coaches choose their profession.
What could be more fulfilling than knowing you’ve played a part in helping someone achieve their dreams?
But being an extraordinary coach is no small feat.
It requires more than run-of-the-mill coaching tools and techniques that you can find in a book

Break This Rule: Maintain a Safe Distance
Like doctors, coaches are often advised to mentor and guide the client but to not get “emotionally connected” to them in any way.
It’s good to maintain a professional distance outside your coaching sessions but very often, the most powerful and permanent way to help a client is to connect with them on an emotional level during a session.
A clinical approach or tough talk may work when you need to lead a client out of a meltdown moment or when you feel the client is in full on self-sabotage mode
But sometimes, you’ll need to position yourself in your client’s shoes and look at the world through their eyes.
You’ll need to practice compassion and move beyond a cold, coach-client relationship to truly make a difference and get through to them.
Extraordinary coaches do this when they see the need to help clients overcome seemingly impossible obstacles and rise to become their best selves.

... By scheduling an activity that the client can participate in and complete, it can give them a sense of mastery in a specific task. This can be beneficial for the client to feel accomplished. Another technique that I feel can be beneficial in therapy is role-playing. Role-playing can be helpful for a client to learn how to dispute irrational beliefs by becoming aware of negative feelings towards theses beliefs (Tan, 2011). In addition, role-playing can help the client to overcome their emotions and practice coping skills that are more effective. The last technique I would incorporate into therapy would be relaxation training. I would suggest ways that can help the client relax including, deep breathing, meditation, yoga, a massage or exercising. By getting the client to have methods to relax, I think it can help with managing their thoughts, feelings and behaviors.
Coaches should have an arrangement of fundamental abilities that they depend on to produce a positive outcome. Definition of a coach from the American Heritage Dictionary, Third Edition (page 167) One who trains or directs an individual or team, to train or instruct teach a team. The goal behind coaching is to exhibit the ability to get the most out of everyone on the team. It should be a goal to bring out the greatest potential from every team member. It’s insane how many players do not even know their true potential. Successful coaches assess these individuals and the team to advance them to the next level of sports. "The Little Book of Coaching, Motivating People to be Winners" by Ken Blanchard and Don Shula (2001) gives a great acronym of the word C-O-A-C-H. The acronym breaks down as follows: Conviction Driven: never compromise your beliefs-Overlearning: practice until it is perfect-Audible-Ready: know when to change-Consistency: respond predictably to performance-Honesty-Based: walk your talk. Personal coaching as defined by Biswas – Diener (2009) is a professional relationship in which coaches work with clients to facilitate experiential learning and improve functioning and performance, of in the context of working toward specific goals. Some core assumptions that people have an innate capacity to grow and develop a focus on mutually agreed upon goals, and an understanding that the relationship is relatively equal and collaborative as stated by the author (2009). Some techniques that are in seen during a coaching process include but are not limited to the following list as provided by the author: active listening, the use of powerful questions which are based on broad and open-ended to raise awareness of the client to take stock of their values and resources, cognitive tools are used to reframe negative interpretations, use different types of encouragement tools, and that clients are held accountable (2009). The topics that will be discussed in this paper include what skills do I current have, which skills need to be develop, my comfort level and effectiveness, coaching approaches (including methods and tools), any challenges about coaching and finally how coaching relates to my professional career.
Every client is unique, and regardless of the theoretical approach, I believe that the therapeutic relationship between client and counselor is critical.
By teaching and providing the patient with the tools he needs to acknowledge the challenges he's facing and improve life situations, you empower a client to become more aware of his own behavior and self-correct it.
Current research implies that an empathetic clinician-client relationship and interrelated ecosystems play the majority role in the success of therapy (Kilpatrick & Holland, 2009). The clinician’s ability to be present and actively perceive what the client is experiencing is of utmost importance in creating a therapeutic alliance. It is imperative that the clinician gains positive regard towards the client and their environment displaying honest acceptance towards the client no matter what issues are presented in session. People inherently have the power to solve their own problems and come to their own solutions. Clients are expected to play and active role in their own change by being open to expressing their problems,creating goals and ultimately evaluating their progress. Clients often use stories to explore their problems in preparation for deciding which goals they want to set and subsequently accomplish. Each client has specific issues and life experiences which the goal should reflect. Clients are expected to put great effort into discovering a desire that the client has deep convictions about and will commit to putting in the work it takes to change behaviors that are no longer working in their life. As I have asserted, coaching is far more than winning or losing. A coach is an essential cog in shaping qualities such as sportsmanship, competitiveness, self discipline, and work ethic. Therapists help clients to choose alternative behaviors to the behaviors that are maladaptive. The next method is getting the client to change how he or she views a situation. This is done inside and outside of counseling. Through this technique a client comes to realize their abilities and strengths. Coaching, however challenging, is a great way to influence the lives of others while also building their character. For as long as there have been sports, there have been people teaching the sport to the players and making them better at it. Coaches must have certain qualities in order to obtain success. One must also look at a coach’s motivation for his job, his passion for what he does, his methods for coaching, and how he became a coach in order to fully understand him. There are many questions someone may want to ask a coach about his profession if they are interested in coaching. Some questions would include: Why did he choose this as a profession? How did he get into coaching? What does one have to do to get a job as a coach? How does a coach become successful? I aim to answer all of these questions and more in my paper.
