The Historical Accuracy of Shakespeare
The works of the famous Shakespeare are referenced often in modern novels, newspapers, and in Television but a good question anyone should ask is are his works historically accurate to the time. As many know William Shakespeare was a writer of the 16th century, creating many famous works such as Romeo and Julie and A Mid-Summers Night Dream. The writer made many writings throughout his time, however his attention to the detail was sadly not as amazing as the number of stories he made, as the things we can learn from his writings were only accurate enough barely get a poor idea of the history of the time, with very few accuracies and too many to count inaccuracies.
Often in Shakespeare’s works references of God’s of the time are seen, sometimes they were portrayed correctly, and sometimes they were written to help the plot. For example, in Romeo and Juliet, Diana was referenced as Romeo says “Arise fair sun and kill the envious moon” (II.ii.4). Due to her different associations Diana was not quite directly represented in the plays as “Diana’s nature was varied by her many associations. As goddess of forest and hunting, she was considered pure and virginal…. As goddess of the moon, she had a changeable unpredictable nature.”(Knowles para. 4). Using the Roman god as a joke, Shakespeare says to kill a woman’s virginity in a form. Yet when he references her, he does not reference the forms of her in a fashion that coincides, so rather than saying, arise fair sun and kill the envious forest, he incorrectly fashions the statement. However, when Shakespeare is referencing the god Queen Mab, who at the time was the Queen of fairies, contradictory to Mercutio’s speech to Romeo of her being the bringer...

The last genre Shakespeare uses is History; an example of this is ‘Henry V’ where he bases this play on actual historic events. The play is set around the year 1420 and King Henry is faced with the difficult decision, whether to attack France or not. There are a lot of incidents in this play where Shakespeare exaggerates the qualities/attributes of King Henry; he changes the way we think of King Henry. The attributes of King Henry are exaggerated to such an extent we believe that he must have been ‘the perfect king’, cunning, merciful, charming and an excellent speaker.

William Shakespeare wrote many plays in his lifetime based on historic events that he had researched using a history books from various authors. One of these many plays are the Tragedy of Macbeth, which Shakespeare did his research from the Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland by Raphael Holinshed. Shakespeare stayed true to the history retold by Holinshed in his play Macbeth, but unfortunately Holinshed’s Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland contained false information. Since some of the information was false in Shakespeare’s research, his account of Macbeth’s characters, setting, and events also contain differences from the factual historic accounts.

William Shakespeare has become landmark in English literature. One must be familiar with the early days of English literature in order to comprehend the foundation of much of more modern literature’s basis. Shakespeare’s modern influence is still seen clearly in many ways. The success of Shakespeare’s works helped to set the example for the development of modern dramas and plays. He is also acknowledged for being one of the first writers to use any modern prose in his writings.

William Shakespeare is widely regarded as on the of the best playwrights and poets to have ever existed. “It is a widely speculated topic that William Shakespeare did not write the poems and that up to about 50 other poets could have writen them.”("Shakespeare facts: Read," 2011) “William Shakespeare is the second most quoted writer in the english language.” ("Shakespeare facts: Read," 2011) It is widely speculated that the true Shakespeare is actually Edward De Vere. I firmlybelieve Shakespeare was not the true playwright because of his lack of education, lack of upper class etiquette, and the different penmanship over time.

Ever since the author's background has been questioned, scholars and other people have debated over who wrote the famous plays and sonnets that have the name William Shakespeare signed on them. Many alternative candidates have been presented, such as Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford. However, these people do not have strong or valid arguments to support their theories. Based on biographical evidence, Shakespeare, not Edward de Vere, most likely wrote Shakespearean works. The arguments for other candidates like de Vere are not strong enough to show that Shakespeare did not write Shakespearean works.
Shakespeare’s plays are a product of the Elizabethan theatrical context in which they were first performed. A lot of pressure was put on Shakespeare as he wrote his plays because he was not allowed to upset the royal family. His style would have been different than others in those times and a lot more thought has gone into his writing than people listening would think. Usually, the audience take for granted the cleverness and thought of Shakespeare’s writing, however, now we have studied and gone into great detail about Shakespeare’s writing, we can appreciate it more than they did:
Across the Universe of Time: Shakespeare’s influence on 21st century society. It is harder to imagine a more universal writer than William Shakespeare. Rarely, if ever, is one of his many plays not being performed anywhere in the world and similarly rare is the tertiary English student who has not examined his work at length. His plays, sonnets and poems are common fodder for high school English departments across the globe.
England's most talented and well know poet and dramatist was born on April 23, 1564, at Stratford-upon-Avon, located in the cetre of England. His father, John, was a glove-maker and wool dealer involved with money lending. His mother Mary Arden was the daughter of a Farmer. William was the third out of eight children whom all died young. His father became Mayor in 1568, after serving on the town council for many years.
During the sixteenth century, the Globe Theater was a magnificent structure that housed the most famous plays. For a writer to have his work performed at the Globe was considered an incredible accomplishment. Shakespeare’s originality set him apart from others during his time and led him to the Globe Theater, where he came upon a tremendous amount of success. As with the rest of England, the Globe Theater flourished during the Elizabethan era, also known as the “Golden Age” representing ideals such as prestige, fame, and achievement. From this time period, notable politicians, orators, tacticians, and musicians evolved into more prominent figures of society. William Shakespeare has influenced the literary world today, although he lived many centuries ago. Much of Shakespeare’s life is unknown, but he developed his success in London, England where he became an actor and playwright. Through the Globe Theater Shakespeare was able to show some of his greatest works and make himself a household name. (William Shakespeare 1).
