The Crisis Narrative
It was four in the morning in early August; seventeen year old Monica Adams was holding her niece, Abigail May, for the first time. Weighing only five pounds, Abigail was very tiny in her arms. As Monica held her, she tried to realize what was happening at that moment; I’m an aunt, she thought. She tried to grasp the feeling of being an aunt, but she couldn’t. It was all too surreal for her.
It all began December of Monica’s senior year of high school. She could remember the day almost as if it had happened yesterday. Out running errands with her mother, her cell phone rang. It was Tony, her then 18 year old brother. “Let me talk to mom,” he demanded of her. Since she was driving, she really didn’t mind giving into his command, but yelled at him not to be so rude anyways. As her mother conversed with Tony she began asking questions like “Why?”, “Who is it”, “How old is she?”, “How do you know her”. She then went on to tell him that the girl needed to go to a doctor and that they needed to tell the parents. Then, before she hung up the phone, she asked, “It’s not yours, is it?” He must have said no because she didn’t flip out.
Once off the phone, Monica asked her mother what was going on. “Oh some girl he knows got pregnant and he wanted to know what advice to give her,” she answered. “Who’s the girl”, Monica inquired. The answer: an 18 year old junior at Newville High.
Her mother had to say no more. Monica knew instantly why her brother had called and asked those questions. He wanted to know how his mother would react to something like that, so he hid it behind the old “I have a friend who has a problem” gimmick. There was no doubt that it was Dorothy, Tony’s girlfriend that was the girl who had gotten pr...

Two days later, Dorothy and Abigail were released from the hospital. The adoption papers had been signed before they were released, so Pam and John could take Abigail straight home. You could see the joy on their face as they left the hospital as a new little family. They finally had a child to love and cherish.
Over the next few weeks things slowly fell back into the normal routine, like it had never happened, but you could tell things were especially hard for Dorothy, Tony, and Mrs. Adams. Mrs. Adams was torn in two over the fact that she had given away her first grandchild; and although Dorothy and Tony were heartbroken over giving up their first child, they realized that the adoption was for the best. They now had a second chance to try to succeed in life. And as for Abigail May; there will never be another child who will be loved as much as she.
Sixth grader Jodee enrolled at a private academy and the first few months were without incident. Jodee reveled in having friends and tried to do everything right to stay in good standing. The trouble started when she called her mother to leave the party early. Jodee begged her mother not to tell her what was going on with the twelve-year-olds—but they were all caught in the act. Monday morning at school she found her favorite suede shoes floating in a toilet bowl of urine with a note attached—“Bitch, this is just the beginning.”
Susie’s mother opened the door to let Molly, Susie’s babysitter, inside. Ten-month old Susie seemed happy to see Molly. Susie then observed her mother put her jacket on and Susie’s face turned from smiling to sad as she realized that her mother was going out. Molly had sat for Susie many times in the past month, and Susie had never reacted like this before. When Susie’s mother returned home, the sitter told her that Susie had cried until she knew that her mother had left and then they had a nice time playing with toys until she heard her mother’s key in the door. Then Susie began crying once again.
...the only major geologic event in the history of the Appalachians. Several glaciers have covered parts of the Northern Appalachians over the last three million years. (Appalachian tales) The mountains have been there ever since and that is how they were formed.
She had been in New York for quite some time, doing well in school and with a brand new best friend. When she returned to her grandparents, she nurtured her grandpa in his last moments, and when he had taken his last breath a little bit of Jacqueline had slipped away as well. It isn’t that she hadn’t cherished the time with her grandfather, but as if his death was too sudden, and when she had started to really find her way in New York and South Carolina began to fade into a memory, the news was a wake up call.

Later after the sea finally retreated occurred volcanic activity. Mountains rose through laccoliths, which also resemble volcanoes. These laccoliths differ in that they do not erupt. They shifted layers of rock upward in the shape of a dome. This specific piece of geologic morphology occurred at the end of the Cretaceous time. This marked the beginning of the Laramide Orogeny, which was a well-known period of mountain formation in western North America.

The question all parents have been chattering about, are vaccinations safe for their children? A vaccine is an injection of a killed or weakened infectious organism in order to prevent a disease. The injection works to stimulate the body's immune system so it can be recognized as foreign, then be destroyed, and "remembered" , so that the antibodies in the immune system can easily recognize and destroy any microorganisms that it later comes across. An antibody is a protein found in the blood. It is produced in response to foreign substances like viruses or bacteria, invading the body. Antibodies do the job of protecting the body from disease by clinging to these organisms and abolishing them.
When April first moves in with the Dions, their generosity and love welcome April into their family and although she does not feel like a complete part to their family, she loves them and knows that is was loved back. During her time with them, her confidence begins to build. The Dions treat her just as they would their own children and celebrate her achievements with recognition and praise. April feels as an equal to other children and believes she has value which she later struggles with. She explains her confidence when, after the Dions celebrate her good grades she says, “For an eight year-old, I had a very large head for a while”(22). By saying this, April is identifying the fact that she knows she had high confidence in her self but after a while, that changed. Following this however, April’s life changes and her pride and self assurance begins to diminish. When April is moved to a second foster family the Derosiers, their neglect and abuse towards her cause her to feel awful about herself and her heritage. The family make April and later her sister Cheryl do all the chores, they beat them and they verbally abuse them with racist names and hurtful stories about their parents’ alcohol problems. This family’s treatment towards April and her sister only make her more ashamed and self conscious about her Metis background which has a lasting effect on her life as an adult. April’s phsycological well-being experiences many more difficulties as her life progresses that cause her self-esteem and identity to struggel due to society’s views and treatment of Metis women and

(Cultivation and social comparison, p. 3).
A crisis that I experienced was a secondary crisis that happened a year ago when my best friend’s husband passed away from clear cell sarcoma cancer. My best friend, Angela, was married to her husband, Mike, for five years before the cancer finally took him. Angela and Mike have two beautiful little boys together, both who were under the age of five when he passed away at only thirty. This was a crisis because it drastically changed my life, my family’s life, and my friend’s life. Mike was diagnosed with cancer back in 2005. There is no specific treatment for clear cell sarcoma, so the only course of action was to amputate body parts that had grown tumors. After battling with this disease, losing a foot, lobes in his lungs,
...land, yet lived on the property with their husband. A woman in this time period would have not used their child to get back at the opposite sex, fulfilling their own dreams instead of letting their child have their own great expectations for life. These two women in Great Expectations just show how they were not portrayed as the typical housewife and mother that would have been expected for this time period.
Our society is being forced to deal with uneducated, illiterate high school graduates. You may ask how is a high school graduate so ill prepared for the world. Have you ever been to a store where a young person, maybe a high school student is the sales associate and the register shuts down right before you receive your change? Did you notice the look of panic on their face because they were not sure how much change you were supposed to receive? It is because of the national crisis, social promotion that can be accredited to this dependency on everything except their educated brain’s. We as educated people must help find a way to save our children from wasting their academic careers due to social promotion. "Truly embracing the idea that all children can learn and making sure that all children do, requires that we all take responsibility for ending social promotion." (www.ed.gov) If we accept and aim to prove that all people are capable of learning life’s basic necessities we will start breaking down the wall of stupidity social promotion has built.
