Over the last 50 years we have become addicted to watching television. It is the way that we get the daily news and how we get our entertainment. But what bugs us the most about watching television? For me, it’s when your watching a suspenseful movie on television and then all of the sudden there is a commercial break. Advertisements are what keep the television station running and funded. But what if there was some device that would allow us to fast forward through all of the commercials and skip the advertisement. Well, there is such a thing, being able to record shows and movies on television and allows us to skip all the commercials. But with this new system of recording shows and skipping the advertisements, how to companies make sure that people see there ads? In this essay, I will explore how companies have had to adapt to new forms of advertising and how they get there advertisement across with making sure people see the ads.
Advertising first started back before The United States declared independence, in 1704. (AdAge) People were first able to advertise through the newspaper. The first advertisement was an announcement for an estate that was for sale in Long Island. (AdAge) It’s interesting that today that there is still a section in newspapers that list houses that are for sale. Later in the 18th century, advertising became more popular by one of America’s founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin. Franklin was responsible for started the first newspaper that included ads called the Pennsylvania Gazette. ...e the way that they display their ads. It was like the way Postman’s “Virtual Students, Digital Classroom”, you can add all this new technology, but it wont change the way that you do things. Postman said, “The technology is here and will be; we must use it because it is there; we will become the kind of people the technology requires us to be, and whether we like it or not, we will remake our institutions to accommodate technology.” (Postman 599) This relates to advertisement companies because when there is a new for of technology and there is a new way that they are able to connect with the people, they will be required to stay up to date and change the way that they advertise. It doesn’t matter how hard we try and avoid advertisements, there will always be advertisements in our society. Companies will adapt to the new technology and will always be in our culture.
Today’s commercials cloud the viewers’ brains with meaningless ritzy camera angles and beautiful models to divert viewers from the true meaning of the commercials. The advertisers just want consumers to spend all of their hard-earned money on their brand of products. The “Pepsi” and “Heineken” commercials are perfect examples of what Dave Barry is trying to point out in his essay, “Red, White and Beer.” He emphasizes that commercial advertisements need to make viewers think that by choosing their brands of products, viewers are helping out American society. As Rita Dove’s essay “Loose Ends” argues, people prefer this fantasy of television to the reality of their own lives. Because viewers prefer fantasy to reality, they become fixated on the fantasy, and according to Marie Winn in “Television Addiction,” this can ultimately lead to a serious addiction to television. But, one must admit that the clever tactics of the commercial advertisers are beyond compare. Who would have thought the half naked-blondes holding soda cans and American men refusing commitment would have caught viewers’ attention?
Advertising is as old as civilization itself. They are forever interconnected. If one changes then so does the other. So as our society evolved dramatically by the influence of technology and social media, so did the way we advertised. With the power of technology, advertising gained the ability to be everywhere at once. These locations ranged from billboards, to projector screens that hang from skyscrapers, to even in your homes in the form of commercials. The evolution of advertising in the modern world is both somewhat disturbing and innovative at the same time.

Advertisements have an enormous effect on the collective conscious of consumers today. Advertisers, through advertisements, have the ability to manufacture a world that may seem real to the consumer. In these manufactured realities, advertisers entice consumers to buy products specifically marketed to them.
We see advertisements all around us. They are on television, in magazines, on the Internet, and plastered up on large billboards everywhere. Ads are nothing new. Many individuals have noticed them all of their lives and have just come to accept them. Advertisers use many subliminal techniques to get the advertisements to work on consumers. Many people don’t realize how effective ads really are. One example is an advertisement for High Definition Television from Samsung. It appears in an issue of Entertainment Weekly, a very popular magazine concerning movies, music, books, and other various media. The magazine would appeal to almost anyone, from a fifteen-year-old movie addict to a sixty-five-year-old soap opera lover. Therefore the ad for the Samsung television will interest a wide array of people. This ad contains many attracting features and uses its words cunningly in order to make its product sound much more exciting and much better than any television would ever be.

Nowadays, advertisements are everywhere embedded in our daily life. They are powerful resources that inform people the latest news about a particular product or brand in many different ways. Most of the people are being able to get more information and detail of a product from media, radio stations, newspapers and internet. The project was evaluated by the rate of work given to be able to watch or listen to commercials. Techniques like the ones used reach back to a familiar name, B. F. Skinner. Recently, his techniques have been refined in order to study the behavior of humans. Changes and additions have been made to increase the ability of the recording apparatus. These include the recording of both forms separately, the ability to control slide or sound stimuli to keep from repetition or delays, and variations in the required amount of reaction for each subject. D’Arcy Advertising Company asked Associates for Research in Behavior (ARBOR) to use four separate, 60 second commercials. The main reasons for selecting four different commercials was to measure the different focus level for each, the different amount of interest for different forms of commercials of the same commercials, and to develop rankings for the commercials (Nathan & Wallace, 1965).

Advertising has been used for many centuries, and was even used during the American Revolutionary War, 1775-1783. Businesses used different advertising techniques such as posters and signs to provide consumers with information about their products, and to persuade them to buy American. Before the war, Americans received their goods on ships from England. The American colonies won the war and became the United States of America. Now it was important for Americans to build a strong American economy (Milton 9). Even today American’s are partial to anything that says, “Made in America.” The economy thrives because of consumerism, so if advertising brings in more businesses than Americans benefit as well.

While there are some similarities between the different kinds of advertisements we see today, there are also many differences. Advertising has also become more unethical than it was in, let’s say, the 50s.
