In fall of 2010, the number of three to five year olds with autism was 49,251; today it is 1 in 68 children. According to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), autism is defined as a developmental disability significantly affecting verbal and nonverbal communication and social interaction that adversely affects a child’s educational performance, generally evident before age three. Children with ADHD act without thinking, are hyperactive, and have trouble focusing; they know what is expected but have difficulty paying attention and focusing on details. Seizures are another medical aspect of children with autism. Twenty to forty percent of people with autism have epilepsy, however, about five percent of children who develop epilepsy in childhood go on to develop autism. If a parent suspects their child is having seizures, they should work with a pediatric neurologist to get a brain study called an electroencephalogram (EEG).
