The cultural issues I foresee happening in my task group project would be for the moms who are poor. Due to them having little resources or little money may potentially mean they get less treatment. They may not be able to pay for the education courses that would be very important. Moms who have more resources may be able to get the help and education they need. The strategies that we will use to address these issues would include, providing information from hospital to hospital, giving the hospital feedback from different mothers. By providing information from one hospital to another we are helping them learn about each other and the ways that other hospitals have found to be effective when working with new families. In addition to that providing the hospital with feedback from new mothers on how their experience went and what could have been better or what went well. My reflection about the macro project, including the specific tasks completed and the general progress of the group is not very good. We have not yet heard back from Marrow County Hospital. I would like to be able to do more work for this project but we are at a pause. I need to get a better understanding on what Taylor is wanted to work on with Marrow County Hospital. I feel like we are just constantly waiting. How it impacts my growth as a person is through communication and making an impact on future moms as well as their families. I am getting better with communication by sounding more professional over the phone. Doing this project will hopefully make a difference new mothers experience at Marrow County Hospital. As a nurse, I am obligated to care for all cultures, and try to understand their values, beliefs, spirituality, gender roles, and language. Cultures can range from different families, environments, disabilities, or even genders. It is a very broad topic, and I hope to recognize these cultures in my nursing career. Some barriers may exist that can make it challenging to work with people of a different culture, but it is possible to overcome these with the resources within the health care system. There are cultures that have very different views on things such as family dynamics and health care than what I’m used to. For example, there are some cultures that do not believe in seeking healthcare when they are ill or receiving medications or blood if needed. However, my family always believed in taking us to the doctor and taking medications when we were ill. There are also some cultures that have very large families that they are very close to however I always had a small close-knit family. I am able to see how these different scenarios could affect the nursing care provided by assuming that other people and families have the same beliefs that my family had growing up. However, this is why it is important to ask questions and do research about a particular culture before making assumptions. For those that learn better from real life senerios, the stories and information that are shared by service providers and families from various cultures, such as Hispanics, European Americans, African Americans and Native Americans can be very helpful. This section of personal stories from service providers and families serves as an great opportunity to read about the interactions between service workers with families of diverse cultures. I learn greatly from this textbook and I know that many others will as well.
Working with different cultures is inevitable in nursing. As nurses we must be open to the challenges of working with different cultures and finding creative solutions to the health care challenges we may experience when caring for patients that are of a different culture. “Culture is an organized group of learned responses, a system of ready-made solutions to the problems people face that is learned through interactions with others in society” (Seibert, Stridh-Igo, & Zimmerman, 2001, p. 143). When caring for patients of other cultures we must avoid ethnocentrism and focus on providing culturally congruent care which is “care that fits the people’s valued life patterns and set of meanings, which is generated from the people themselves, rather than based on predetermined criteria” (Potter & Perry, 2005, p. 120). To accomplish this we must communicate with our patients and families and have a clear understanding of their expectations. If there is a breakdown in communication then there is the potential for conflict and a poor patient outcome.
For this discussion board post I will be defining several terms that are related to cultural diversity and the influence it has on nursing practice. These terms include: cultural baggage, ethnocentrism, cultural imposition, prejudice, discrimination, and cultural congruence. Then I will explain the importance of cultural self-assessment as well as define it. Finally, I will describe the five step process in giving nursing care that is culturally congruent.
In a team-oriented setting, everyone contributes to how well the group succeeds overall. You work with fellow members of the group to complete the work that needs to be done. Having the right people in the correct roles is an important factor in measuring the success of a team, where you are united with the other members to complete the main goals. Every group is made up of definite strengths and weaknesses. Our team's 3-5 major strengths necessary to work accordingly consist of Informer, Summarizer, Orienter, Piggy-Backer, and Encourager. One of our strengths as a team is that we get input from everyone involved. Every member of our team is a leader in some way. Part of being a good leader is knowing how important it is to receive the best ideas from each member of their team. We attend group meetings where we discuss any challenges, issues, and problems. At these meetings, we often exchange ideas or brainstorm new ones with each other and come up with the best and most creative team solutions as potential answers to those perceived problems.
