As society progresses, the question of whether we should welcome novelty is brought up. While it is important to embrace novelty, I believe that society should still focus on their past in order to learn from their prior mistakes.
To start off, Perspective Two states that we should constantly focus on change and learn from our mistakes in the past in order to be successful in today’s society. I entirely agree with this perspective because without learning from our mistakes, history will repeat itself. Additionally, this perspective is very logical because it references prior performance and explains how that will shape how society progresses in the future. For instance, our society has previously made many mistakes throughout its history.

So the question must be asked, what is a sociological imagination and how does it affect our views on the world? I do not take the elevator a lot in my day to day life because I live on the second floor in my residence hall and my farthest I have to travel to get to class is three flights of stairs. I never see the need to wait for the elevator, but even though I probably have not been on one for over four months, I still, like most people, remember the social norms that go along with riding in one. When you go in you either push the button for the floor you need or you ask someone to press the button for you. If you were having a conversation with someone either you wait to continue it when you get off or you lower your voice considerably. These rules obviously only apply if there are strangers in the elevator with you. If you are alone in an elevator you can essentially do anything (that still follows all of the laws. You could sing to yourself, run in place, or even play patty cake and no one would know. The problem is, once someone gets on the elevator with you, these behaviors are now breaking a norm. Within the recent years it has become one of the most debated issues in the United States. Sociology is something I didn’t know about until I took this class. This class introduced sociology to me. I learned about how society basically made boys supposed to like blue and girls supposed to like pink. Sociology is not something you just learn when you are just born. You learn about sociology throughout your life. Mills (1959/2000) wrote that “an individual can understand his own experience and gauge his own fate only by locating himself within his period” (p.5) and he must use his sociological imagination to do so. This commentary will first look at Mill’s concept of the sociological imagination and will then argue that he was correct in his statement that in order to understand one’s own experiences, one must understand his or her place in society at any given time in history. The works of Karl Marx and Émile Durkheim will be drawn upon to support this argument. To illustrate how one must locate him or herself within one’s period to understand personal experiences, the role of women as housewives will be explored from a feminist perspective. Socialization is a never ending process that continues to change our perspectives to help us learn and adapt to a social reality. The question, “ What makes a good society” is never the same for every individual that comes across trying to answer this sociological question. What may work in one society, may not work in another. But I am guessing you already new that. Depending on the type of culture, location and era; a good society can be anything. If you were to have been raised in the western side of the world, your good society is one of a democracy. Where the people have power and we have checks and balances in our government. But what if you were raised in the east, were people live in a socialist-communistic society. Where the government has the power and people are treated equally. Who is to say which type of society is “good”?
