This article is about evaluation and management of sports hernia and how it is starting to get increasing attention as a source of disability and time lost from athletics. This article also talks about how there is increasing evidence. That there is an association between range of motion-limiting hip disorders and sports hernia in a number of athletes This has added a new complexity to the pathology and decision making on how treatment should be handled by the physician. Ever since its introduction in 1980 as “Gilmore groin” it has come to be known for many other names including sports hernia, Gilmore’s groin, osteitis pubis, slap shot gut, sportsman’s hernia, hockey groin syndrome, athletic pubalgia, and core muscle injury. The nonsurgical treatments for this condition have not been well documented in the literature according to this article. However the lack of nonsurgical data makes it difficult to determine if surgical repair is clearly superior. In spite of resolving itself the symptoms return as soon as activities are resumed. in the event that the examiner feels that sports hernia might be present the author recommends palpation of the potential sites of injury. Lower abdominal, adductors, pain to palpation is common in athletes; therefore, it is critical to determine if the pain is consistent with their symptoms. The abdomen and abdominal obliques should also be palpated.
