During my eight years personal experience with Woman's Aid I oversaw women coming out of abusive relationships. This made me realise I want to become a qualified registered social worker to help people promote changes in harmony with community needs. Inspired by Woman's Aid and my support work I want to progress to a professional level, achieve proper knowledge for legally accountable practice and prevent unqualified or harmful actions. While supporting adults with learning disabilities I learned to work in partnerships with clients and professionals. I used creative approaches incorporating clients' interests into care programs, i.e. college courses, relaxation possibilities, family involvements enabling clients to lead the fullest life possible. On a micro-level women joined confidential groups contributing their learnings of domestic abuse and oppression providing support for each other and developing a sense of self-esteem. On a mid-level, we as a group learned to consider future educational programs and their potential benefits. Besides, on a macro-level collaborating with regional branches, we prepared a book on domestic abuse and the effect on families raising the awareness and opening issues of women from ethnic minorities. My intention is to become a social worker helping women and their families to manage political and economic changes confronting possible oppression. Likewise, victims of domestic abuse often unemployed or dependent with isolation caused by language, cultural differences, immigration status, and lack of welfare support. I believe my knowledge of languages will aid women with language constraints to exercise their rights to help with legislation and UK border agency policies. My motivation to be a social worker initially came up by my aunt. Since childhood, I realized that my aunt, a Macanese, was a deaf. Even though our conversation relied on a pen and pieces of paper, we had tight relationship. Unfortunately, my aunt split from his husband spontaneously due to my uncle’s adultery. After that, aunt lost her interest in everything, even making communication with their children. She persistently felt anxious and got hallucination lately. When I was in high school, my aunt was diagnosed as suffering from depression, a seriously one. For quite a long period, my mother stayed at Macau to accompany with my aunt. At that time, I wrote many letters to her on the grounds that I believed words could deliver positive energy. Subsequently, my letters seemed to cut ice with my aunt. She told me that reading my letters could ease her anxiety and enhanced her to stay positive in a day.
I come to Fordham University with expectations of completing my Masters of Art degree in Social Service. As a single parent, I have faced many challenges raising my special needs child. My innovation to help disadvantaged children with social and emotional problems encompassed me to continue to pursue a career in the Social Service Profession. This will increase my chances of being a successful Child Therapist. In order to provide a comfortable environment for someone to share freely, one must truly feel safe and free. My previous preconceived notions no longer obstruct my ability to reason and understand. Domestic violence is an unspoken epidemic where countless women live in silence because they have been faced with people who just don’t understand. To put it more accurately people who just don’t want to understand. As before mentioned often it is through someone else’s pain that we can subtly begin to see the good. My own personal pains have offorded me such an opportunity. With my continued growth I can only remain optimistic about the counseling which is yet to come.
I first became interested in social work when I took a human rights course as a part of my political science major requirements. Throughout the course, I was fascinated and disturbed by the historic oppression of many large groups in society, and I realized my interests lie outside of the political arena; thus, I double-majored in social policy & practice because of my desire to learn more about how to enhance human well-being, fight social injustice, and pursue social change. I soon realized I wanted to pursue graduate social work education in order to gain a more holistic understanding of social problems and human ailments and, in turn, better understand the best ways to fix them. My background in political science and social policy gives me a unique perspective on the field of social work, as I have gained immense knowledge on social issues, the law, and public policy that will be useful in my graduate school and professional endeavors to fight for social
Finally, we need to shine a light into dark corners, where the women abusers don’t want you to look. Darkness is the friend to fear, violence, and verbal assault. No woman should believe that they deserve to be treated inhumanely by any person. No excuse validates any type of anger or violence against women. No word or acts are so powerful that a woman should lose their self-esteem and soul. Any form of violence against women such as domestic violence, verbal assault, or gender inequality is a problem that affects a great number of women in our nation. It should never be tolerated. We need to create a culture where gender inequality is not tolerated. Where men and women can aspire as far as their dreams can take them.
My passion to become a social worker began when I was pursuing an undergraduate degree. From a young age because of my compassion and empathetic nature, I knew that I wanted to work inside the human service field. I wanted to use my personal characteristics to improve individual’s lives. Social work was my calling because of the many different areas in the field that are all primarily focused on making a difference. I am interested in clinical social work, working with individuals and families.
Domestic violence affects a large amount of relationships in the United States each year. As the times have changed, abuse has become less accepted as a normal occurrence, and society has begun working together to provide awareness towards violence in intimate partner relationships. “Problems of family violence are potentially the most destructive in our society” (Kurland 23). Domestic violence is a problem that begins in the home, and spreads to affect the world around it. Violence is present in relationships of all demographics, be it race, sexual orientation, or social class. No one is entirely safe from experiencing abuse, but if society is taught to recognize the signs it can save a life or even prevent abuse from happening.
My career goals after completing a Master’s of Social Work degree is working with victims of domestic violence or sexual assault. I want to advocate and empower survivors that have gone through these types of traumatic assaults. I also want to raise awareness within communities and help break the cycle of abuse that continues
Two courses that were critical in my intellectual development were the Sociology of Social Movements and the Dynamics of Domestic Violence. In the Sociology of Social Movements, I designed a research project, “Women, War, and Resistance”. In this piece I examined crucial issues surrounding wars on a global level, such as rape as a weapon of war, sexual trafficking, and various grassroots war-resistance groups formed by women on a local level. In addition, after taking the course on Dynamics of Domestic Violence, I had the opportunity of doing field work at a domestic violence shelter. For this independent study, I met with a professor of the women’s studies department on a weekly basis to discuss my experiences and to receive assistance in my research project: “The Effects of Domestic Violence on Adolescents.”
I have been voiceless and silenced for eighteen years of my life. My entire childhood consisted of me getting abused and not being able to speak up without getting shut down. I grew up making friends that suffered from addictions or got in trouble a lot, they were also voiceless. Watching my friends grow up and fall deeper into the grasp of their addiction was heartbreaking, no one would listen to them. No one would look past their actions to find out what was causing them to turn to drugs or alcohol, they were only the "problem kids." Ever since I have always been driven to help individuals acquire safety and advice. I am driven to be in a position that lets me help people who are in similar situations, which is why I want to go into the addictions
My interest in becoming a social worker started at a very young age. I remember always possessing the desire to help people who were in need and have frequently being the person who others have approached when faced with difficult situations. Often, I felt as if listening was not enough. I remember feeling unequipped to help them. When I spoke about this career choice with some of the big influences in my personal life, I was told no matter what situation I have ever been faced with I have always managed to handle myself appropriately in what were, sometimes, delicate situations. Since domestic violence is one of the most underreported crimes in the country, the course would also focus on how to encourage women to speak out if they experience domestic violence (O’Neil, 2010). Females would be trained on what services are available for them to contact if they feel that they have experienced any sort of domestic violence. There are a variety of services available that can be anonymous phone lines to receive advice for these situations. Also, there are programs that can help females in the reporting process and can provide legal advice if they wish to take the issue to court. There is a wide range of services that are available to females who are wishing to report domestic violence, which would make the main point of training to inform females on these different services to help them determine the steps that they wish to take in reporting this

I plan to carry out the best possible ethical behavior to protect the clients and staff at these social welfare institutions; my goal is to make a difference in these patients’ lives. I am seeking an MSW at the Kent School of Social Work for the purpose of gaining education, experience, and required credentials in order to prepare me in working with clients with disabilities and their families. My reasons for wanting to become a Social worker are quite varied, the main one being to assist people in realising their potential and helping them reach their goals, and at this stage of my life I believe the experiences I have gained are extremely transferable in terms of working with the general public; but overall I can now offer the Social work profession and its clients a committed and caring attitude. The work of a social worker is complex and all encompassing. Social workers work in many capacities seeking justice, liberation, and equality. There work is global, as they work to put policies in place to govern practices. To keep up with societal shifts and generational changes there learning is continuous. As new questions rise so does the need for the continuation of research, not only to answer these questions but to implement into
