During my eight years personal experience with Woman's Aid I oversaw women coming out of abusive relationships. This made me realise I want to become a qualified registered social worker to help people promote changes in harmony with community needs. Inspired by Woman's Aid and my support work I want to progress to a professional level, achieve proper knowledge for legally accountable practice and prevent unqualified or harmful actions. While supporting adults with learning disabilities I learned to work in partnerships with clients and professionals. I used creative approaches incorporating clients' interests into care programs, i.e. college courses, relaxation possibilities, family involvements enabling clients to lead the fullest life possible. On a micro-level women joined confidential groups contributing their learnings of domestic abuse and oppression providing support for each other and developing a sense of self-esteem. On a mid-level, we as a group learned to consider future educational programs and their potential benefits. Besides, on a macro-level collaborating with regional branches, we prepared a book on domestic abuse and the effect on families raising the awareness and opening issues of women from ethnic minorities. My intention is to become a social worker helping women and their families to manage political and economic changes confronting possible oppression. Likewise, victims of domestic abuse often unemployed or dependent with isolation caused by language, cultural differences, immigration status, and lack of welfare support. I believe my knowledge of languages will aid women with language constraints to exercise their rights to help with legislation and UK border agency policies.
