In elementary school children should be worried about who can cross the monkey bars the fastest, not finish all their homework. Elementary school students should not have homework because it will stress not only the child out but, the parents and teachers. It will take a toll on the physical health of the children and may ruin the childhood experience. Kids having too much responsibility at their age could burn images in their brain, which could decay what their childhood was like. When children grow up and have their own family, will they only be able to tell their children how much homework was given to them? “From kindergarten through high school, the causes of childhood stress are numerous” (Wilde). With standardized testing commencing in the 1st grade in most states, the teachers send study guides and work home for the students to practice. A lot of the time teachers don’t have enough time to cover all the material on the state tests, so the child is left with a study guide not too sure about all of the information on it. The child usually then lays in bed and starts to worry about not finishing their study guide completely and wondering if they will even pass the test the next day! When a child asks for help from a parent, sometimes the parent doesn’t remember the data that was once taught to them in elementary school. Parents may feel slightly embarrassed for not being able to help their 3rd grader with simple math problems and then start to worry if they are even good parents because they can barely help their child with their homework. Any teacher who cares about their job would never want to watch a child struggle and be worried about the homework given to them. Will the teacher start to be anxious that not all of the students are comfortable with the material they’re learning? The teacher may feel like they have failed and let some of the students down. “Kids who were persistently obese from the start of kindergarten through fifth grade performed significantly worse on math tests” (Jaslow). Is the obesity of the children starting to effect their testing and homework? While there is only so much daylight, children should be out playing sports in their spare time. When most people stress, it leads to stress eating. When children are stressed about their homework it could lead to them constantly eating because they are so worried. Homework could possibly be taking a turn for the worse on the children of Americas
