“Woohoo! Another school day’s over!” My friend exclaimed. “But we still have homework to do.” I moaned. Is this how all your days end? Whether it is or not, I’ll tell you why students shouldn’t have homework. The reasons include that, homework stresses students out, homework de-motivates students, it makes students have less time for socialization, and can cause poor growth. Firstly, homework causes pressure. In a study conducted by Stanford Graduate School of Education, 56% of the students said that homework is a primary stressor in their lives. Another study showed that less than 1% of high schoolers reckon that homework is not a stressor. The difference in economy and education in families also creates tension and stress. That is because some students have parents who have time, and are knowledgeable so they can help their children with homework. However, many parents have to work all the time and are not very well-educated, therefore, they can’t help their children out. Since students are forced to do homework, and don’t have any other option, it kills their creativity. This can also lead to bad study habits. As homework is mandatory, students learn that they have to study, not need to study. Next, if a student is not very good at a subject, and can’t do the homework, he/she will get discouraged, and will not only lose even more interest in the subject, but will also stop liking other subjects he/she used to enjoy. This brings me to the next point, the one size fits all problem . While each student has different needs , 85% of U.S teachers use this method of giving everyone the same work. It doesn’t matter whether one of the students has a lot of knowledge on that subject, or if they haven’t ever heard of
