“Woohoo! Another school day’s over!” My friend exclaimed. “But we still have homework to do.” I moaned. Is this how all your days end? Whether it is or not, I’ll tell you why students shouldn’t have homework. The reasons include that, homework stresses students out, homework de-motivates students, it makes students have less time for socialization, and can cause poor growth. Firstly, homework causes pressure. In a study conducted by Stanford Graduate School of Education, 56% of the students said that homework is a primary stressor in their lives. Another study showed that less than 1% of high schoolers reckon that homework is not a stressor. The difference in economy and education in families also creates tension and stress. That is because some students have parents who have time, and are knowledgeable so they can help their children with homework. However, many parents have to work all the time and are not very well-educated, therefore, they can’t help their children out. This causes a lot of parent-child conflicts, which can weaken family relationships. Good family relations are especially important for teenagers …show more content…
Since students are forced to do homework, and don’t have any other option, it kills their creativity. This can also lead to bad study habits. As homework is mandatory, students learn that they have to study, not need to study. Next, if a student is not very good at a subject, and can’t do the homework, he/she will get discouraged, and will not only lose even more interest in the subject, but will also stop liking other subjects he/she used to enjoy. This brings me to the next point, the one size fits all problem . While each student has different needs , 85% of U.S teachers use this method of giving everyone the same work. It doesn’t matter whether one of the students has a lot of knowledge on that subject, or if they haven’t ever heard of
More than 70 percent of students have said that they have stress caused by homework
There have been so many studies recently that talk about how homework has started to become more burdensome for more students. The United States has gone from teaching to shoving homework in kids’ faces to keep them on the idea that school is always there. Classes have been extended from 45 minutes each day to an hour and a half. This was supposed to allow students work time at the end of classes and get help when needed. Instead, teachers lecture from beginning to end. This gives no time for students to get the help they need when can’t come in any other time. The rationale has changed in America that doing more, always means doing better. This, however, can be the downfall to anything. There can’t be homework assigned just for busy work, that becomes a waste of time. The homework needs to be assigned as a thoughtful way to engage students, so they know what is being
When you think about school one of the first things that pops into people’s mind is homework. Basically if you have asked your parents or your grandparents they would say that they remember the homework load. Now we all know that homework can be beneficial but also can be very unhealthy with all of the stress that it causes. Over the years the homework load has increased because of the fact that schools think that they need to try to keep up with other countries in academics. And will doing all of this homework now be all for nothing later? The homework load has increased these past couple of years and it is causing a lot of stress on kids and overall is not helping their academics in the long run.
Healthline.com has said that “Students in high achieving neighborhoods who spend too much time on homework have more health problems, stress, and alienation from society.” Being sick of school is one thing, but when school is making you sick because of the homework you have now is bad. Elementary kids having physical problems just from homework can eventually lead to other possible problems down the road. These problems include substance abuse, becoming a high school dropout, and possibly death by suicide. So why risk a student’s life for a few homework
Many parents are also bothered over the force of homework on the connection between their kids and teens.... ... middle of paper ... ... Think about how much homework we’ve done since we were in kindergarten, how many times we’ve stayed up and woke up half-awake, how many times we’ve kept others awake, and how much paper we’ve wasted. If you think that is a lot, think of all of the students around the world doing the same.
Today I will be arguing whether or not young school kids should or should not have homework. Personally I think they should not. These kids are so young and the last thing they should be worrying about is homework, instead they should be outside with friends, getting dirty and having fun! A quote from Monica Pellarin says, “I say give the kids a break… Let them enjoy life before life gets too tough.” I love this because it’s the truth. Life will be so tough in the future so just give them a break and let them have fun!
One of the pieces of evidence is that homework can help make disciplined minds and also homework is considered a powerful instructional tool by the government, this is all from the article “ the case for and against homework” by Robert J. Marzano and Debra J. Pickering. This is strong because the government that know alot about the world and how it works is saying that homework is a big thing that we do need. “Teachers call a ban on homework” by the BBC new also states that the government think that it is one of the key parts of learning and quotes “but research has cast doubt on its effectiveness, and has even suggested too much is counter productive”. This quote shows that too much is not good for kids but when you are giving kids too much and are not giving them the right amount they start to think it should be band. My second reason is according to “ how much homework is too much” by the NBC news that homework can teach you long life skills for things like for jobs, college and other important things that you would have to do.
Also in some occasion there is just too much homework to finish it in time, and much more commonly there is not enough time to get the recommended amount of sleep with the homework completely done. These are some of the reasons why homework should not be mandatory.
When a student has too much homework it can cause stress leading to serious health issues in the body physically and mentally. Stressing over homework can negatively affect school work. By stressing it can cause failing a class, bad eating habits, lack of sleep, and depression. A poll in 2006 called the Sleep America Poll that dealt with students in school work. At most 80 percent of teens
They’re soon overwhelmed and exhausted from a long day doing classwork, then to come home just to do even more. Too much homework stresses out students and cuts into family time. One reason why an excessive amount of homework is bad for students is because it causes a lot of stress. For example, research by Stanford University says, “More than 70 percent of students said they were ‘often or always stressed
In conclusion, homework is a waste of time. Time that can be better spent is with family and having fun participating in extracurricular activities. Eliminating homework allows students the reward of free time and the invaluable time spent with family. Homework creates unnecessary stress and strain for parents and students alike. Also, homework allows teachers to pawn off their own teaching responsibilities to students and parents with hours of homework. Homework is not beneficial and it should be banned for students Kindergarten thru 8th grade.
When given copious amounts of homework students are stuck choosing between their grades and their family, and the former usually wins. Students feel obligated to complete their homework before anything else. People often complain about the child obesity epidemic in America. However, no change can occur if students are stuck inside doing their homework until the sun sets. Additionally, if students focus all of their time on completing homework, they have no time to develop creative, intellectual, and physical skills needed to grow into a well-rounded adult.
Many others might say that homework helps exercise your brain and makes you smarter, and that’s only partly true. Homework can be a good thing, but teachers need to decrease the amount they are giving their students. If teens are stuck in their rooms doing homework all day, they can lose the ability to socialize or fall into a pit of depression. Doing homework all day might also lead to an attention span problem and can distract them from the outside world. The lack of physical activity can cause kids to become obese or unhealthy in some other way, leading to a more unhealthy
In today’s world, education is more important than ever, and with education comes homework. However, many teachers give too much homework, which makes students extremely stressed. In addition, some are into sports or after school activities, and some have part time jobs they have to work at, which adds additional stress to the already overworked students. Mounds of homework can cause students to be under so much stress that it affects them mentally, physically, and emotionally. Stress can make students sick with colds, stomach aches, high blood pressure, sleep disorders, and/or anxiety disorders (Menninger and Dugan).
Students are bombarded with hours of homework every night and it interferes with their lives. They are tired of staying up late at night to finish their homework or a paper that is due the next day. They should not have this workload that they have every night because they also have to live their childhood. Life is too short to be staying up until 11:00 because of schoolwork. Homework is unhealthy for students and it is not academically beneficial for them.
