The Selection Process High-quality nursing care is a distinct characteristic for any healthcare organization. For this reason, healthcare organizations must create an effective selection process that will enable them to hire the best-qualified professionals to care for the patients they serve. Organizations must analyze their mission, vision and values in order to set the appropriate requirements that applicants must meet when applying for a specific job position. Nurses make up the greatest number of healthcare professionals in hospitals and are considered to be the face of the organization. This system assures that the applicants are highly qualified will be able to perform all the functions of the job position. Hired employees will be more productive and demonstrate outstanding job performance. This selection system saves the organization money due to preventing negligent hires. Lussier and Hendon(2013) describe a negligent hire as “a legal concept that says if the organization selects someone for a job who may pose a danger to coworkers, customers, suppliers,or other third parties and then that person harms someone else in the course of their work for the company”(p. 198). The applicant will demonstrate responsibility, compromise, the ability to work within a team and under pressure, and a strong work ethic. During the interview process, it is important that the nurse managers attempt to identify the type of personality that the applicant has, and decide if the personality will be enhanced by the position. The interviewers must also determine if the applicants possess intellectual, social and physical skills that will allow them to perform the duties of the PCN. In this particular case, the applicant must be bilingual since the majority of the population is Puerto Rican. Having strong professional nursing credentials that reflect the years of experience and education as a practicing RN is highly important. Being able to apply the nursing process and comply with the nursing best practices is also important in determining if the applicant is the right fit for the job. Most importantly, individuals must be able to carry out the VHA mission, vision, and values.
