Schooled or Educated?

The issue of how we should be educated and what we should learn in school is a highly talked about issue in the United States today. Should students go to school for twelve years? Do they need to all of these standardized tests to be a successful adult in society? Or issues such as grading and how it affects students. Good Will Hunting is a positive movie for a viewer, which shows the issue we see in schools and society today of being schooled or being well educated. They were both taught the non-traditional way of education. 1S Jerold Lucey says in his essay “Home Schooled?” that “[t]he survey found that home-schooled children scored well above the national median on standardized tests,”(##). This is just another piece of evidence that shows it is not how you are taught, but instead how you are educated. Traditional education is not for everyone as it was not the way that home-schooled kids wish to be educated, or Will in the movie. Parents always want what is best for their kids. Education is just another thing that they want to see their children succeed at. 2S According to Cynthia Drenovky and Isaiah Cohen in their article titled “The Impact Of Homeschooling On The Adjustment of College Students”, they say “[h]omeschooling is an option for education that has increased considerably since the 1970s,” (##). This shows that it is becoming more and more popular because parents are getting sick of sending their kids to an actual school where they won’t pay attention or learn. But on the other hand the movie is telling us that we need to do whatever we want with our knowledge to be happy in life. You do not necessarily need to be making the most money or driving the nicest car, you just need to do whatever is going to make you happy. Will makes the decision to not take the job right away but instead go after his girlfriend in California, because that is what is going to make him the most happy. Society says that you must be pretty smart if you have a Bachelor’s Degree, or a Master’s Degree, but there can be people out there who are smarter than you just because they were not great students in the classroom, but were well educated. This movie really makes you think about the different ways that people can become educated and become a good person in
