Many researchers suppose that students who have bad attitudes tend to drop out of schools. Candeias, Adelinda and Araújo, et al, found that students who have negative attitudes have lower performance and higher rate of school failure. These unfavorable attitudes in schools are caused by teachers.

It changes their perspective on how the world works. Children feel pressured enough at school, adding ways to test their knowledge isn’t going to prove anything. A change in the grading system might be what we need. In “School is Bad for Children”, John Holt explains his view on how school

To say school is bad for children is extremely inaccurate, many children look forward to this as their safe haven. In John Holt 's essay “school is bad for children” he argues that school prevents children from learning what they want and that it enables their curiosity making them become passive learners I found myself disagreeing with his arguments. Holt proposes ideas to reform the school system to make it more favorable for children in which i do agree with partially. School is one of the many things children need to succeed; getting students to work together more efficiently is great but taking students out of the school to learn along with removing compulsory school attendance and required curriculum is not the answer. The studentletariat at a very early age loses the ability to think and be creative in their education. Ultimately what is created is apathy, a student that does not care to go beyond what is taught. A student who no longer learns for the sake of learning but only does just enough to please the boredwajzee. The studentletariat hold no personal interest in what is learned and therefore the perfect student is molded by the boredwajzee.

Frequently students are unfocused due to thinking the subject they are learning is boring or not interesting . Students tend to ask, when will i need this is life? Is this important? In other words they find excuses to put something to the side, only for their argument they have better things to do. The lazier they get the more behind they get in class which leads them to having really low grades.

This then leads to the students not learning all that they should in school. Moore outlines school systems in multiple ways that make you notice the defects in the schools and realize that people can be more knowledgeable if our nation had efficient, well-structured schools. Moore shows us that because education is lacking in America, it is necessary that the government makes a shot to enhance school systems. Our nation doesn’t appear to take much incentive towards advancing our overall education. Proof of this is shown within the corrupt school systems.

To say that the “bad kids” spend a majority of their time in school, therefore school causes their unacceptable behavior, is naive logic. Holt offers no hard evidence to prove that school is at fault. In one of Holt’s examples, he makes school the scapegoat for student drug use. He reasons that “school is a long lesson in how to turn yourself off,” and students seeking to have an “awareness to the world,... can only find it in drugs” (74). Though this could very well be true in some cases, once again his logic is flawed.

The common core state standard creates extra pressure on teachers, puts our students at a true disadvantage, and removes parent involvement from our student’s education. Teachers are our hidden gems. Although not treated as such, they are a resource that is overlooked and underappreciated. With the new standards our children may take a test that seems confusing and they may even get a little discouraged by feeling that they have no knowledge over the subject when they truly do/ Is that what the common core was created for?

The children see failure as not being as smart as everyone tells them they are or simply stating the wrong answer to a question the teacher asks (Lahey). From creating this fear of failing comes the hatred of learning. Kids are beginning to learn that “mistakes are something to avoid” and as a result you have students who “are afraid to take risks, to be creative, [and] to be wrong” because they associate being wrong as being a failure (Tugend). Kids understand that mistakes will happen, and from these mistakes you should learn, but are being taught to try to avoid mistakes because it is too big of a risk for their grades and also other students and parent’s views of them. For example, in high-school students have the choice to take general, honors, or advanced placement classes.

Grading System Reform Teachers have always used grades to measure the amount a student has learned. This practice is becoming ineffective. Many students have a wide range of grades, which show that grades may not show what a student really knows. Therefore, the standard grading system should be replaced. Some reasons why grades should be replaced are bad grades can hinder a child’s performance, grades define who a student is in the classroom, and grades are not an effective way to see if students have learned the material.
