Clinical experience exposes the student to professionalism being used in practice. Through nursing practice, each of Tanner’s Ways of Knowing’s are put into action through patient experience. Professionalism in nursing focuses on advocating for the patient, taking responsibility for caring for their health. The nursing profession entails being knowledgeable of how to appropriately care for a patient. a nurse practices autonomy that allows them to make decision independently. As a professional, a nurse is dependable and takes accountability for the cares of their patient’s health. As I look back, I remember that as child, I dreamt of becoming a doctor. When I went to visit the patient in the morning before doing vitals and assessments, I listened to what he needed and was feeling. He was telling me that his chest was hurting and he was having difficulty breathing even with oxygen. Knowing that information, I informed my primary nurse about his symptoms. At that point I was advocating for my patient, making sure that the right person knew what would need to be done to help him out with his occurring problem. My assessment experiences that I had with my patients, demonstrated well the autonomy that I had. Assessing my patient allowed me to independently interact with my patient, asking them questions. The cylinder represented me and the rolled up magazines attached around it represented my patient experiences. The plain magazine colors reflected upon the patient’s diagnosis. The more abstract colors represented each of the patient’s personalities and feelings. Each rolled magazine surrounded me (the cylinder), as my patient experiences taught me new things in nursing.
