During my second week of observations, I felt more comfortable participating in the writing sessions that I observed. In my first week of observations, I began to doubt that I would be a great tutor because I recognized that I was not very comfortable explaining syntax errors or clarifying the difference between possessive and plural nouns. However, during my second week of observations, these doubts began to dispel because I began to pay attention to the other aspects of a tutoring sessions, especially regarding how it was best to phrase a question to a student. These questions were is it okay to assume that a student knows what a “preposition” is or understand the term “subject-verb agreement and is it better, in terms of diagnosing errors with the students’ writing and timing, to have the student read the entire paper or stop at every paragraph? These questions arose while observing because, in terms of the first question, tutors jumped right in the session using terms like “parallel structure” and “possessive nouns” and I always questioned if the tutor could do justice to the terms by defining and using examples to make the term more concrete for the student. So my answer to the question is that I will always ask students if they understand what I am saying and let them know that it is okay to stop me at any point in the session to explain anything that I’ve said. The second question arose because in sessions where the tutor had the student read the entire paper at once, the tutor would usually go back and re-read sentences and paragraphs. In sessions where the tutor had the student read the paper paragraph by paragraph, the session was better managed, time wise, and it made it easier for students to focus on errors concerning the organization of their paper. So, my answer to this question, is that I will have students read their papers paragraph by paragraph,
