Writer, artist, and civil rights activist Dr. Maya Angelou once said,
You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, and how you can still come out of it. (as cited in Acosta, 2014).
This wisdom applies to consumers’ difficult situations as well as my own journey to the social work profession. When I was a sophomore in high school, my teacher gave me the task to research and write about what I wanted to do “when I grew up.” I instantly thought of my dream of becoming a labor and delivery nurse because I find joy in caring for others and welcoming new life into this world. As much as I refused to admit it, I knew this revelation contained some truth. I was emotionally defeated, especially since I have always tackled adversity. I prayed for God to give me direction for how He wanted me to use my life for His glory. My mother suggested I write my paper on social work because I loved to encourage others, even if social work was not the path I would eventually travel. As I began to research the profession, I discovered the heartbeat of social work is human worth and encouragement. One of my family friends adopted her little boy after overcoming many miscarriages as I was writing my paper. When I saw the look of sheer joy and gratitude on my friend’s face as she was holding her new son at his baby shower, my heart swelled. I realized I would do anything to help other families experience the beauty and love of adoption. Thus, I was surprised to learn that social workers help create families through adoption, and I excitedly finished my report. I had one of my mother’s supervising nurses read my assignment.
