Prompt 1 (Major Essay) I believe in the saying that through the serendipity of exploring oneself and intensive self-examination, one ends up making all sorts of unexpected discoveries. The saying seemed to have fittingly applied to me when I was advised by my counselor to explore the world outside of easy classes at my community college. Upon being convinced by my counselor’s gift of the gab, I was given opportunities to enroll into a fistful of programming classes focusing on basic C, Java and embedded system. Unexpectedly enough, I found myself taking pleasure in the wide variety of programming courses more than my major classes. Then my interest in computing ultimately has not been restricted to the classroom and college life. It was when I visited my friend’s software company that builds essential components of a smartphone application for the government. Rightly so, just watching my friend working has given me a totally new perspective on how certain things function, and even how business operates in broader spectrum. I was first introduced to the real world CS and programming languages in Grade 9. I learned Java for 4 years and watching my code execute correctly was always delightful. And that is when I decided that I wanted to pursue CS. At UCI, I learned Python in my first year and currently I am learning C++. Some assignments have really blown me away as I was able to connect the dots between different concepts and produce results. To get exposed to CS, I job shadowed a Web Developer and a Director of Operation. To gain new skills, I did a research project in areas of crowdsourcing where I learned Django and applied my knowledge in creating a website with other teammates using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. I worked on IoT and Augmented Reality as a summer intern. I am currently working on Augmented Reality as an intern, this quarter. I believe that learning and applying are different things and unless you are able to develop or progress by applying your knowledge you won’t know if you have indeed trodden the path of mastering it. I am grateful to have several opportunities to help me grow and advance in CS.
My journey to adulthood can be compared to biting into a fresh apple. The core of the fruit is the peak of knowledge that I strived to obtain. When I was in middle school, I had totally no idea of what Computer Science is, but I was pretty proficient in using computers at that age. The only thing that I knew about Computer Science is that one of my aunts is in that field and that’s all, nor of my parents are in that major. Not until in High School that I got the sense of what programming is like. I was taught basic simple codings and I really enjoyed it and thought that the class was actually quite fun. But the class didn’t give me any sense of the important real-world applications of Computer Science. Not until recently as I am in the Computer Science major, I started to really have the real idea and to gain real passion for the field. Computer Science is not all about programming.
Throughout my life, I have endeavored to seek answers beyond my own experiences and have tried to assist others as they venture into their own strange territories of learning. Inquisitive and curious, my four year old bespectacled face was always pressed into a book, intently reading and learning more about the world. I amassed hundreds of books of which I read repeatedly, giving me a jump start on my learning process, one that few others had. Whenever I discovered something new, I would continuously strive to untangle every web it contained until I understood it forwards and back. This great affinity for reading was only trumped by my ever growing passion for computers. A subtle introduction to the computing world via educational games uncovered a world of vast proportions, one which to this day I am still exploring.
A fascination for Science & Technology and keen interest in the ever-growing world of technology motivated me to take up engineering. The power of research and delivering it for the growth of Society is what makes me interested in the technology side of science. I choose to major Computer science Engineering with an intense urge to delve into this challenging field. During my under graduation program I learned the various fundamentals of Computer science Engineering which together with practical course works reinforced my interest.
Fifteen years ago, I proudly walked across the stage at Milwaukee Trade & Techincal High School, having victoriously earned my High School Diploma. At that time, I was only naively aware of the road that lied ahead. I would soon begin the pursuit of a degree in Computer Science at Marquette University, but my first semester would be interrupted by legal troubles and further hindered by the untimely realization that I’d prefer not to spend the rest of my life “alone in a room,” performing what I had begun to perceive as the tedious and antisocial task of computer programming.
My ultimate goal in my career is to make a commendable contribution to the computing world either by starting an innovative venture or doing research which would change the dimensions of future computing and the way we perceive the computers. Now I have determined that a dedicated higher study on Computer Science will enable me to aggregate all my previous knowledge & experience on the field and encourage in achieving my career goal. I am looking at Graduate studies to provide me with the required expertise to carry out higher studies.
In the year 1995, our family received their first ever computer. It was a Pentium I with a 75 MHz processor, 64 MB ram, a 16x CD-Rom, a 5-gigabyte hard drive, and Windows 95 operating system. I thought it was the coolest thing man has come to know. It had games, and a completely new world called the internet. Not only could you talk to people from all around the world, but also you could watch streaming videos, view pictures, and send e-mails with attached files. It was like the worlds fastest postal service. From that moment forward, I was intrigued and in mesmerized by computers, and that led to me choosing to spend the rest of my life with them.
At the dawn of the information age, to be young, as Wordsworth said in another context, is very heaven. Getting to know what goes inside computers, the engines of the Information Technology revolution, and knowing how to work with them enables one to understand the technology that makes it all possible. Understanding this, I chose to do my undergraduate study in Electronics and Communications engineering.
